Nigel Powell
lots of musical stuff
Jason Moulster
lots of other musical stuff
Influences
Hugo Largo, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Marillion, Fish, I.Q. or IQ depending, Genesis, Fugazi, Jetplane Landing and Reuben, PJ Harvey, Ben Folds, Ben Folds Five, dEUS, Sucioperro, others that I will think off when I unpack my CD collection. And if anyone can spot the Intentions Of An Asteroid lift on the new album (when it comes out), there will be props. Oh yes, many props.
Sounds Like
A bizarre collision of Genesis, Marillion, Elvis Costello, Hugo Largo, Martin Grech, Porcupine Tree and R.E.M. Although not usually all in the same song. Unless it's a long one with lots of bits. And, y'know, Unbelievable Truth, Radiohead, that shizzle. If you're into Coldplay you might like some of this, especially the new album stuff which isn't up yet. My dad says some of it sounds like James Blunt, but I'll forgive him. At least he didn't say Daniel Powter. If you know where to look you can hear IQ, idlewild and PJ Harvey. Squint a bit.

Nigel Powell used to be in the band Unbelievable Truth, mainly as a drummer, although he also co-wrote, played all of the keyboards and a fair proportion of the guitars and even a couple of songs on bass, did the string arrangements, and produced the albums. A fair bit then. The first album Almost Here was loved by critics and sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide, with the band touring all over the world including being invited to support Tori Amos on her 'Plugged' tour in 1998. Personell changes at the record company saw the darker and edgier follow-up sorrythankyou come out on an independent label. The album more than satisfied the fanbase, but the half-hearted promotional campaign meant it stayed a cult item. When the band broke up in September 2000, he first busied himself with mixing the epic 35-song double CD send off 'Misc. Music' for release in 2001, then busied himself playing gigs with Mark Mulcahy (appearing briefly on his Smile Sunset album) and Emm Gryner, and finally turned his attention to putting the bits and pieces together that he had written into an album, while at the same time touring around the country drumming with rising Oxford stars Dustball (soon to change their name to Dive Dive), and doing other drumming sessions here and there. Jason Moulster, Unbelievable Truth bassist and guitarist, also came in to contribute bass and a valuable perspective. That's the last we'll speak of him, since he likes to keep a low profile.
The debut album 'miseryguts' was released in August 2003. Some people said:
"Simply stunning" - Record Overplayed Fanzine
"He has a remarkable melodic gift" - Logo Magazine
"A talent to be taken seriously" - Oxford Times
and ProgWereld made it one of their albums of 2003.
Mark Kelly and the rest of Marillion very kindly allowed Nigel to use their Racket studio while they were touring 'Marbles', which allowed him to record the drum tracks with Radiohead engineer Graeme Stewart. The rest of the tracks were completed with George Shilling with whom Nigel produced the new Andy Yorke album. Still maniac touring with Dive Dive and Frank Turner, who both have albums either recently released or soon to come.

“(…) Blaupausen zeitlos guter Rockmusik. Aber dann zwei Übersongs: The Hill Where I Lay als verdammt bester Blackmail-Song, den Blackmail nie geschrieben haben, und Take Off/Space als epischer Ausstieg, der neuneinhalb Minuten lang mit dichter Atmosphäre klarmacht, warum die Band auch auf reinen Prog-Seiten neben Pink Floyd und Mogwai Lob einheimst“ (VISIONS)
“(…) Happyless and Waste and whine are blueprints of timeless , brilliant rockmusic.“ (VISIONS)
„Die zwischen verträumten Licks und schrammeligen Soundwänden balancierende Gitarrenarbeit sowie der getragene Gesang verleihen den Songs überdurchschnittliche Qualitäten.“ (ROCK HARD)
