"Pensive and deceptively simple, Goldings’ compositions that make up this CD are brief, succinct, and largely without long improvised solos. Each evokes a mood set by a variety of understated means, such as a slow, lilting ragtime-like piano melody, a gently rhythmic loop reminiscent of a train going over a crossing, sus chords repeating on a Hammond through a very slow Leslie as guitarist Peter Bernstein weaves a meandering tune above, tremeloed Rhodes chords over soft percussion loops, and surprising turns of melody and harmony. Even the grooving tunes seem preoccupied and dreamlike as they click along. Thinkin’ feller’s jazz, this is, beautifully realized by Goldings solo on some tracks and accompanied by his longtime trio including Bernstein and drummer Bill Stewart on others.
