  • Bio

Fumiko Miyachi was born in Tokyo in 1979 and has lived in U.K. since 1993. She studied composition at Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she gained her BMus(Hons) and MMus degrees. She completed her DPhil Composition at University of Sussex under Martin Butler in 2006. Her main areas of research dealt with cross-cultural influence and appreciation and ‘acoustic thinking in electronic music and electronic thinking in acoustic music’. Her previous teachers include Jeremy Dale Roberts (RCM Junior), Malcolm Singer (GSMD), Louis Andriessen, Martijn Padding and Veri Matti Puumela (Siberlius Academy, Helsinki). Miyachi’s music draws inspiration mainly from her multi-cultural background, Japanese and European which are seemingly at odds with each other. Her interest lies in searching for a funky hybrid between the two cultures on levels of aesthetic, deeper musical understanding and meaning, always striving for clarity in her music. The Irish Times described her music as “…ethereal, meditative…and moving.” (October 2003) Her music has been performed and commissioned by musicians and performance groups worldwide, including the BBC Singers (Spitalfields Festival 2006), Opera North (National New Composers’ Forum, University of York 2005), Lontano (La Linea Latin Music Festival, Southbank Centre 2005), de Ereprijs (Gaudeamus Music Week 2004), Concorde (Galway Arts Festival 2005) and Decibel (The Cutting Edge Series, The Warehouse 2005 amongst others). She is an active pianist in both contemporary and traditional repertoire and has given numerous performances including Crash Festival (2003), Bang ’03 Festival (2003), The Cutting Edge Series (2002) and Bath Festival (2002) where she collaborated with a German visual artist Daniel Kluge. Other cross-discipline collaborations include working with choreographers at London School of Contemporary Dance and artists from Royal College of Arts. She is also a founding member of decibel for whom she has written a number of works and also premiered a wide range of new works by Michael Finnissey and Diana Burrell. Miyachi has been awarded numberous prizes, the most recent being The New Millennium Composition Prize (2007).
