  • Bio

With rave international reviews and two prestigious New York awards (2008 Nightlife Award for Outstanding Cabaret Vocalist and Best International Artist 2003 Backstage Award), Barb Jungr is renowned for her unique vocal style, interpretation of song and radical approach to arrangements. Her acclaimed releases on Linn Records and Naim Label, and "revelatory" live performances have brought her to audiences all around the world. Barb celebrated 2011 touring the UK extensively with a new Bob Dylan collection, performing the show Girl Talk with Mari Wilson and Gwyneth Herbert, and collaborating with Kuljit Bhamra and Simon Wallace on Durga Rising. The CD The Man In The Long Black Coat – Barb Jungr Sings Bob Dylan was released in May 2011 by Linn Records to excellent reviews and she toured throughout the UK and to the USA in autumn 2011, performing for the first time in LA and Austin with return appearances in San Francisco and a 2 week run in New York. "One of the best interpreters of Jacques Brel and Bob Dylan anywhere on this angst ridden planet today" (Village Voice, New York) and "one of the best nightclub singers in the world" (Time Out New York), Jungr is "a fearless iconoclast who dives into the deepest waters of popular song to wrest exotic treasure from the ocean floor" (The New York Times). Her earlier Dylan collection, Barb Jungr Sings Bob Dylan: Every Grain of Sand (Linn Records 2002), which the Wall Street Journal called "the most significant vocal album of the 21st century thus far," is now regarded as a cult classic album. Born and raised Rochdale and Stockport, Barb has worked with many of the finest musicians and composers in the UK (including Mark Anthony Turnage who wrote 'About Water' for her to sing at the re-opening of The South Bank with the London Symphonietta), has toured all over the world with the British Council in the 1990s (Malawi, Cameroon, Yemen, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Cote D'Ivoire, Sudan), appeared in Australia (2006, 2007 and a sellout tour in 2010), toured across Norway and Holland and performs regularly in New York and across the United States (several seasons at The Cafe Carlyle and Metropolitan Room and Joe's Pub, New York, Catalina's in LA, Rrazz Room in San Francisco and for Austin Cabaret). As a writer and lyricist, Barb's credits include The Jungle Book (Birmingham Stage Company), The Fabulous Flutterbys (The Little Angel Theatre), Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast and Dick Whittington for The Newbury Corn Exchange, and Mabel Stark Tiger Tamer currently in development for Northampton Royal and Derngate. Barb lives in London.

Jungr needs no added ingredients to improve her communication of these great songs... John Eyles 2010-02-22.... .. Before recording this album, Barb Jungr and her pianist Simon Wallace toured extensively with the stage version, The Men I Love. The show received rave reviews across the UK and in New York for Jungr's daring interpretations of its songs, and for the drama and emotion her voice conjures up..... From Ella Fitzgerald in the 50s to Rod Stewart in the past decade, albums with "songbook" in the title have tended to feature classic songs by notable songwriters like Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter and their ilk. Now, this album has broken that mould and radically redefined the term..... The Men I Love: The New American Songbook focuses on songs written since the 60s, including some by stars like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen. Alongside these is an adventurous mixture that takes in Motown, The Monkees (via Neil Diamond), Bread, Talking Heads and Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon..... Jungr's powers of interpretation make such an eclectic selection into a vital, coherent album. She sounds as if she has lived every line of every song. These are not just cover versions. Instead, Jungr and Wallace have taken the songs apart to find out how they work, before remodeling them..... Often the results are unrecognizable compared to the originals. The opener, Once in a Lifetime, bears no trace of Talking Heads' funk workout, replaced by a sparse, dramatic and almost confessional reading that hinges on the line "my God, what have I done?" delivered with an appropriate sense of revelation..... Key to some of these versions is the combination of two songs on a related subject. Can't Get Used to Losing You moves seamlessly into Red Red Wine, while This Old Heart of Mine becomes Love Hurts – the pain of lost love is a recurring theme throughout the album..... These recordings build on the piano and voice duo of the live show. The subtle addition of bass, cello, flute and percussion adds shading, complementing Jungr and Wallace without detracting from them. Jungr needs no added ingredients to improve her communication of the intense feelings contained in these great songs..... ..Barb Jungr Loves.... Jaques Brel.. Bob Dylan.. Nina Simone.. Odetta.. Gardening is fun – hold the front page – I never got it, Dillie Keane told me gardening was her yoga, and I said 'yeah yeah' but suddenly yesterday it all came clear. I'd come up to Stockport to see my mum, and she had asked me to help her with the back of her garden where the trees were overgrowing, and I got stuck in and pruned and gathered and sweated and strained, and the end result was wonderful. So now I am thinking, maybe allotments are the secret of life in the city, maybe a garden is the road to happiness. It will probably pass, along with most of my enthusiasms, within days.My main joy is a rescued plant from the garden centre, that, re-potted, seems to have sprung to voluptuous, flowering life..... But, enough about gardening – and back to shows and yoga and song and music. I'm back into Mabel Stark at the moment and reading and writing, after a fabulous week at the Metropolitan Room in New York. It was a superb run, with friends and sunshine thrown in for good measure. Jane made me feel so at home in the East Village, and Thelma kindly picked me up from and took me to the airport. I went to a play reading of Kristine Reyes new piece for Victor Lirio's Perl Project, and saw my friends Andy,, Gaby and David, and Hal and Alaine, and managed to fit in some yoga at East Yoga on 13th Street. It was gorgeous. Lovely audiences and a wonderful time. It passed by too fast. Simon played up a storm and I think had a ball too, hanging, as he does, with the 'jazz cats'..... Back in the UK I went back and saw The Fabulous Flutterbys at The Little Angel with a unch of friends including Claire Martin and Mari Wilson, my God-daughter, Amelia and Mari's daughter Lili. The cast have gotten so tight, Seonaid and Johny are precise and brilliant and Arran has blossomed into a puppeteer and plays and sings and plays like an angel. Gorgeous. .... And now summer beckons and I'll research and write and I hope to swim in the sea and catch some rays in Cornwall and see family and friends and relax, before Edinburgh and Australia in August and beyond..... And do some yoga!.... So please do have a fab fab summer, and I hope to see you somewhere soon,.... As always - namaste!.... Love,.... Barb xxxx
