  • Bio

<b> Born in the bustling metropolis of Kokomo, Indiana when he was very young, Chris Bousum began his mystical search for truth, music, and aspartame free gum. It was at the tender age of 38 that he joined his partner in crime Jay Karp and formed the band The Police. Seeing the name was already taken, they formed the band Strange Reflection. Chris once had a fissure. <b> But before forming the band, Chris began writing songs. Lots of songs. Some stank, others were bad. But at least he tried. Influenced by songwriting great Terry Taylor, the moody melodies of Phil Keaggy, and the singing style of Steve Mauldin, he continued to write until he wrote one particularly bad song, then all the others seemed ok by comparison and so Chris was encouraged. Jay once broke his arm trying to stick to walls like Spiderman. It was Chris, however, who was bit by a spider some 30 years later...he has yet to gain superpowers. <b> One day while counting the moles on his arms, Chris decided to record some of his songs and let his accomplice Jay hear them. Jay did. Also, Chris had 214 moles before he got distracted by thoughts of music. Chris and Jay had previously gone by the names, Tad and Newt, Sickle and Elbert, Nanook and Pahoonahoo, and Gus Williams and Jack Sikma. <b> Later Brent Bousum joined the band on bass and our permanent temp Pat Bousum added lead. Our search for an accordion player has been sadly unfruitful. When Jay was but a tyke an announcer from KI3 Television once said, "Look at the determination on his face." He was playing baseball in case you wondered. Fissures hurt by the way. <b> We recorded a demo album called I See You also known as The White Album with eyeballs on it. Since that time, we have played many great venues and Chris has had less fissures. Rumor has it Jay did finally stick to a wall. You should've seen the determination on his face.

Strange Reflection is a band with a unique sound. We cannot really put a finger on what it is, exactly, that we sound like. We use the term Indie rock because we dont have an actual genre. We started out with acoustic and folk roots, and now have settled into more of a classic rock sound. Take that combination and add a slice of alternative and just a dash of punk, and what you get is what we are.

.. Strange Reflection was formed in 1998 by Chris Bousum and Jay Karp. Originally an acoustic/alt/rock band that mixed humorous observations with poetic insight.

Chris comes from a talented musical family. He was a vocalist/rhythm guitarist for Kokomo's Christian metal band Light Force. Though Light Force did metal covers, Chris had written songs for decades that were not performed until he started SR with Jay. Chris mixes piercing lyrics with soulful vocals and catchy guitar hooks.

Jay brings the energy to the band with his driving talents at drums. Another member of the same musical family, Jay's determination to bring Chris' songs to the public became the catalyst for the band. Jay's versatility could be seen in his performance of such tunes as I See You, Inches Of Veil, and Kings.

Just a couple of months back, Brent...the guy who handled the "roadie" work for the band, decided it was time to become more engaged and picked up the bass guitar and began intensive training to be the long missing bass player that the band has been missing. Brent, yet another member of the same Bousum clan, has made a meteoric rise in a short time of playing the bass.

Angie Leyda, Jay's sister, became background vocals for the group during their first stint. She eventually took lead for some of the popular tunes. Her husband Dave Leyda was the brains and technical genius behind the SR sound engineering. The Leyda clan has increased from three to five since the band ended in 2001 and will be supporting from the sidelines as the new SR hits the streets.

Andy Patmore (another brother of Jay and Angie's) provided bass for portion of SR's first run. Brent Bousum (another relative...this is starting to sound like the Partridge Family) assisted Dave with the sound, video, lighting, equipment set ups and take downs, prior to his becoming the bass player. Ron Hagy was also provided important help in our fledgling days.

We were blessed to jam with some really talented musicians. Dan Myers and Bob Thomas joined us in our very first show. Mike Forkner and his legendary guitar skills jammed with us for a few shows. One of the most talented musicians we ever had the chance to play with, Doug Showalter, is now tearing it up on the West Coast. Most recently Shane Carden and his amazing wife Brandi spent half of a year with SR. We learned so much from playing with those talented guys. Jeff Smith, Monty Imel and others have shared a stage with us. We had a blast playing with these guys.

In our first time around, we tried to walk softly without offending anyone. We had some limited success. With songs ranging from the rockin' tunes Kings and I See You to the ballads Like The Sun and Caroline, SR tried to please as many people as possible with its performances. This was one of the bands weaknesses. With heavy convictions for what they observed were crucial and controversial issues in faith and life, the general presentation of the band prevented them from bringing these issues to light.

This time around we are pulling no punches. No longer will we sit back and be afraid of hurting peoples feelings or offending their sensibilities. Some of our old songs will remain, but some have evolved to reflect the band's new heavier message and heavier music. The acoustic/folk sound of the old band will now be a bold version of Strange Reflection. Songs that may have hurt peoples feelings like the anti-abortion anthem "SEND THEM ALL TO HEAVEN" and the in your face, "VIRGIN OVERLOAD" are on the playlist.

We are currently dusting off the equipment and working out the kinks. Soon enough, you will see and hear the new and more attitude driven Strange Reflection.

You can help Strange Reflection purchase new equipment and record their demo with a donation. Thank you for considering.

We have been extremely lucky to have played alongside some extremely talented musicians. Andy Patmore (now with Rone), Mike Forkner, Doug Showalter (now tearing it up in L.A.), Pat Bousum (the Beatles Remix), Jeff Smith (the Beatles Remix), Bill Bousum (jammed with us at Bousumstock), and Eddie Bousum practiced with us a few times. These guys are all amazing.
