.. Das Rhein-Main-Gebiet mit der Metropole Frankfurt ist durch die jahrzehntelange Stationierung amerikanischer Soldaten und ihres Rundfunksenders AFN ein hervorragender Nährboden für Bands afroamerikanischer Prägung. Wer das Glück hat, schon länger hier zu leben, denkt dabei zurück an kommerziell megaerfolgreiche Acts wie Supermax und Boney M., später Snap und Milli Vanilli, aber auch an Szenestars wie The Touch (mit dem damals noch international unbekannten Leadsänger Terence Trent D'Arby) oder die Funkateers von Midnite Fun. Doch irgendwann in den Neunzigern riss der Faden ab. Ob der Abzug der Amerikaner aus Frankfurt und Umgebung ein Grund dafür gewesen ist, bleibt Spekulation, die aber nicht jeder Grundlage entbehrt. Umso erfreulicher ist, dass seit letztem Jahr wieder eine Gruppe aus Frankfurt überregional von sich reden macht, die diese einst mehrere Dekaden prägende Tradition der Black Music aus dem Rhein-Main-Gebiet neu aufleben lässt. Im März 2010 feiern SKYWALK im ausverkauften Frankfurter Liveclub Nachtleben Premiere, an diesem Abend erscheint auch ihr Debutalbum "Alive". An der Vielfalt der Einflüsse in ihrer Musik kann man sich begeistern. Leicht und geradezu mühelos mischen SKYWALK moderne Genres wie Contemporary R'n'B, Hip-Hop und Ragga mit traditionellem Soul und Reggae. Dabei pulst der Beat der Rythmusgruppe unablässig und fügt sich nahtlos in die Soundwelt der Synthesizer und Keyboards ein. Das hat nicht jeder R'n'B-Act zu bieten. Wo andere ausschließlich mit Computern und Samplern produzieren, spielen SKYWALK ihre Songs live ein. Computer und Sampler arbeiten dem anschließend zu. Dadurch mag diese erdige Geschmacksnote entstehen, die auch das Champagner-Glitzern der Diskokugeln nicht vermissen lässt. Das Publikum liebt SKYWALK, weil die Musik eminent tanzbar ist und dabei auch anspruchsvolle Hörer in ihren Bann zieht. Nur so ist zu erklären, dass SKYWALK – das sind Udo Kistner, Torsten Buckpesch, MM Michael Minor, Uwe Schmedemann, Torsten Dechert und Sheila Messina - nicht nur eine stetig wachsende Fangemeinde begeistern, sondern mittlerweile ein ganzes Netzwerk, eine Familie aus Musikern und Künstlern um sie herum gewachsen ist. Ein Beispiel für diese Community-Idee ist die neue Single "Tough Guy", die mit dem jamaikanischen Reggae-Artist Yah Meek als kongenialem Gesangspartner eingespielt wurde. "Tough Guy" ist die erste Single aus dem Album "Alive", aber keine reine Auskopplung: Die drei Versionen der Single sind in dieser Form nicht auf dem Album erschienen. Irgendwie scheint "Tough Guy" zu einem Schlüsselsong der Gruppe geworden zu sein. Wenn Sheila Messina singt "I'm not looking for a fight, I'm looking for a lover", spricht sie von sich selbst, von ihrem Leben, von ihrer Band und mit ihrem Publikum. So kann man den Kritiker verstehen, der bei einem Besuch im SKYWALK-Studio begeistert erklärte, "Tough Guy" könnte die "seit fast 30 Jahren ersehnte Antwort auf Tina Turners 'Private Dancer' sein" - die wunderbare Fortführung einer langen Tradition. SKYWALK The Rhein-Main area with its metropolis of Frankfurt has been a magnificent breeding ground for bands with R&B influences. This may well be attributed to the omnipresence of the American forces and their radio station AFN. Resident oldtimers can't help but remember the huge international success of Supermax and Boney M. in the 1970s, Snap and Milli Vanilli in the late 80s and early 90s, or stars of the local scene such as The Touch with a then unknown Terence Trent D'Arby, and the funkateers of Midnite Fun. In the mid-90s the well ran dry – probably due to the withdrawal of the American soldiers from the area who had been a great audience for decades. Fast forward to 2010 – again, a Frankfurt band is making waves reviving the tradition of Black Music from the Rhein-Main area. Their sold-out debut at the "Nachtleben" in March sees the release of SKYWALK's first album which is aptly titled "Alive". Merging contemporary R&B, Hip Hop and Ragga with traditional Soul and Reggae influences the music of SKYWALK is a unique and energetic mix of the best in Afro-American music, the steady, unrelenting pulse of the rhythm section providing a seamless backdrop for the sound scapes of synthesizers and keyboards. SKYWALK promote the human factor by recording live. Instead of bulding tracks on computers and samplers these are used "after the fact" only to fine tune and enhance results. This is why the irresistible down home, down-to-earth flavor of the music comes across with the champagne sparkle of a mirror ball on disco adrenalin. SKYWALK audiences just love the kind of dance-ability that even hard core intellectuals can't resist... SKYWALK are Udo Kistner, Torsten Buckpesch, MM Michael Minor, Uwe Schmedemann, Torsten Dechert and Sheila Messina. The band are expanding into a network of musicians and artists to promote Frankfurt soul again with Jamaican Reggae artiste Yah Meek providing harmony vocals on the "Tough Guy" single. Originally released on the "Alive" album, "Tough Guy" is now available as a single featuring three different mixes. Somehow, "Tough Guy" is essential SKYWALK, Sheila Messina singing "I'm not looking for a fight, I'm looking for a lover". Refering to herself, the band, their audiences she seems to be at ease with everyone.
