Retracing their stylistic choices to the “folk” current, anyway Silverea's intend to trace a transversal furrow in it, but such an operation of collection and syncretic reworking of forms does not decay in a heterogeneous “pastiche”, in a chaos of overabundant shapes, or in a universal adhesion to everything that belongs within the folk ambit. Mainly, their musical trend is northern (Irish, Scottish, Celtic, Revival Folk, Folk Progressive music), contaminated by some American tendencies (American blues, country and folk: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Ani di Franco). To make this stylistic mixture homogeneous comes the attempt of coding in a musical language the movements of soul and nature, in the search for the outmost purity of sound. In the recovery of northern musical tradition, the favourite form of song is the “Ballad” (from the Celtic term “walad”, which designates an epic song with folk contents; it is a form in verse which consists of a narration, which can be more or less versified, of vicissitudes which are part of legendary sagas, anyway never systematized in an organized mithology as for the classical one); so it is clear that the greatest influences are represented by the historic folk companies that, filled with the Renaissance spirit that was disclosed by the fertile decade of the youth ethical rising, brought to light the ancient tradition of the ballad, giving it new lustre, adding to it a gauged touch of modernity. We refer to the Steeleye Span, to the Fairport Convention, to the Silly Wizard, to the memorable Joan Baez’s voice and especially to the Pentangle (absolute reference of the band) who worked such a homogeneous stylistic synthesis that they can be defined both a folk and a progressive band. The purpose is not a circus or carnival evocation of the Middle Ages, but the achieving of a philological fidelity to the Ancient Spirit on the level of ideas, purposes, and of the whole attitude. This spiritual programme is not in contrast with the human duty for a human being of enjoying its own times. Knowing what the past has produced is simply essential to progress, in conformity with an aesthetics which imagines artistic Beauty not as originality at any rate, but as innovation as natural development of things in the world... LA MUSICA .. Riconducendo le proprie scelte stilistiche al filone folk i Silverea's intendono tracciarvi all'interno un solco trasversale, senza che una simile operazione di collezione e rielaborazione sincretica di moduli scada giammai in un "pastiche" eterogeneo, in un caos di forme sovrabbondanti, o in universale adesione a tutto quanto s'inscriva nell'ambito "folk". L'orientamento musicale è di matrice nordica (musica irlandese, scozzese, celtica, folk revival, progressive folk), contaminato da certe tendenze americane (Country, folk, blues americano: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Ani di Franco). A rendere la miscela stilistica omogenea occorre il tentativo di codificare musicalmente i movimenti dell'anima e della natura, nella ricerca, in senso acustico, della massima purezza sonora. La forma di "canzone" privilegiata, nel recupero della tradizione musicale nordica, è la "Ballata" (dal termine celtico “walad”, che indica una canzone epica dal tono popolare; forma in versi che consta di un'esposizione più o meno versificata di vicende facenti parte di saghe leggendarie, mai tuttavia sistematizzate in un'organica mitologia, come accade invece per i mitologemi classici); è chiaro dunque come le maggiori influenze siano rappresentate dalle storiche compagnie folk che, inebriate dallo spirito rinascimentale che schiudeva il fertile decennio dell'insurrezione etica giovanile, riesumarono l'antica tradizione della ballata dandole nuovo lustro, patinandola di una modernità mai tuttavia fuori luogo. Ci riferiamo agli Steeleye Span, ai Fairport Convention, ai Silly Wizard, al memorabile canto di Joan Baez e, su tutti, ai Pentangle, assoluto riferimento della compagnia, che operarono una tale sintesi stilistica (e tanto omogenea), da poter definirsi una band "folk" e parimenti "progressive". Non si tratta di rievocazioni circensi o carnascialesche dell'evo medievale, ma di una fedeltà filologica allo spirito antico sul piano delle idee, delle intenzioni, dell'intera attitudine, senza che un simile programma spirituale sia in qualche modo in contrasto colla necessità umana di partecipare del proprio tempo. Conoscere quanto sia stato prodotto in passato si fa dunque essenziale per poter progredire, secondo un'estetica che concepisce il Bello non necessariamente nella forma della novità a tutti i costi; piuttosto in quella dell'innovazione come progressione naturale delle cose del mondo.
