Poppy and The Jezebels
The band emerged with the ‘Underage’ scene while still at school when they travelled from Birmingham to play alongside The Horrors at the opening night of the original Underage Club at The Coronet in London’s Elephant and Castle. Seriously adept at social networking, the girls were sharing bills with **SCUM and Shonen Knife(( before Mollie’s fourteenth birthday. The band signed a publishing deal with Mute and released two critically acclaimed indie seven-inch singles, establishing their own label – Gumball Machine.

Having left school to concentrate on the band full time, the girls realised that their charming but lo-fi and DIY approach would never support their dreams of real pop immortality, and enlisted the help of top pop producer Richard X to re-emerge now as Poppy & The Jezebels mark 2!

The collaboration with Richard X came about when, smitten with his pop philosophy and intrigued by his remixes and ‘re-productions’ of Soft Cell and Saint Etienne, the girls approached the producer with their rehearsal room demos. He agreed and the single was completed in January.

Poppy & The Jezebels met and started playing together at the same Birmingham comprehensive school when Mollie Kingsley (Vocals, Bass), Dom Vine (Keyboards, Vocals) and Amber Bradbury (Guitars, Vocals), then in year nine were joined by Poppy Twist (Drums, Vocals), a year older at fifteen.

LAST WEEK'S FEATURED ARTIST

Twin Atlantic
Scottish rockers Twin Atlantic are lead singer and guitarist Sam McTrusty, Ross McNae on bass, piano and vocals, Barry McKenna, guitar, cello and vocals, and drummer Craig Neale.

They formed in Glasgow five years ago and, following the release of their mini-album Vivarium in 2009, found themselves supporting the likes of Blink-182, My Chemical Romance and The Gaslight Anthem across Britain, Europe and the US.

‘We had three years where we’ve had this barrage of dream scenarios which we grasped with two hands,’ says Sam. ‘But we suddenly thought, “What are we doing?”’

The four piece promptly returned to the studio to put together their first full length album Free, teaming up with producer Gil Norton, who has previously worked with Pixies, Foo Fighters, Feeder and James. The album was released on 2 May.

Twin Atlantic’s new single Make a Beast of Myself is receiving support from Radio 1, while their album is currently climbing the US alternative rock charts and this week is at number 33.

How long have you been making music?
I've been making music since I was about 14 in various shapes and forms, although Twin Atlantic is the only thing that has been more than a hobby.

What inspired your latest album?
We've been through some pretty massive ups and downs over the five years that this band has been together and seen made some debatable decisions. I think the album is inspired by our own mistakes and feeling that everyone is making the same false mistakes and wanting to bring back an honesty to rock music.

What process do you go through to create your music?
We work in various ways. Our singer Sam is mr vocals and usually he has a skeleton to build around so we mostly write to that. He seems to have found an interesting angle over the last couple of years that we all really feel connected too so that's the current norm. There are some songs that evolve from ideas that myself or Barry our guitarist have and sometimes we have full skeletons to play with too so everything and anything is possible.

How would you describe your sound?
I think it's dynamic rock, heavy pop, acoustic & everything in between those genres. We can never quite settle. I'd be happy to settle on heavy pop though. That's my best description.

What would your dream collaboration be?
I would love to collaborate with one of the greats like Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder or Freddie Mercury if he was still here as I think he's a real genius. Looking outside the box though it might be really interesting to work with somebody from the dance world. I think it's a massive talent to write a song with fewer sections that still achieves that mass audience. Somebody like our countryman Calvin Harris would be very cool.

Where can we catch you performing next?
We're playing Reading & Leeds, T in the park and a whole lot of warm ups and one offs around the UK over the summer in between being in the US and in Autumn we'll be back in the UK for our biggest shows to date which we can't wait for.
