Bio
Nickolas Kaplan, an upcoming trumpeter/composer/arranger from the Northern Chicago suburbs, attended New Trier High School, where he played in their Downbeat award-winning music ensembles and its jazz program. Nickolas was a featured soloist in its Jazz Ensemble 1 and a member of their advanced combos, where he was also was recognized in his senior with the Woody Herman jazz award. He also participated in the Midwest Young Artists (MYA) jazz program in Highwood, where he performed in its Big Band and top combo throughout Chicagoland. Nickolas was selected in 2007 and 2008 for the Illinois Music Educators' Association (IMEA) District 7 Jazz Band I, and in 2009 was selected to attend the IMEA All-State Conference, where he ranked second in the state. He also attend Birch Creek Music Performing Center's jazz summer camps for two years, where he made the top "Ambassadors" combo, which performed throughout the Door County community, and was a corecipient of the "Outstanding Wind Section Leader" scholarship award. Nickolas has had the privilege performing alongside jazz greats such as Wayne Bergeron, Rob Parton, Jon Faddis, Orbert Davis, Dick Oatts, David Bixler, Jeff Coffin, Elliott Mason, Steve Davis, Ramsey Lewis, and the Count Basie Orchestra rhythm section, as well as working with such such esteemed jazz educators as Jim Warrick, Nic Meyer, Dr. Bob Lark, Chris Madsen, and Victor Goines. A versatile composer, Nickolas has also to date written twenty-six original jazz compositions and four big band arrangements. He has studied trumpet with Bruce Daugherty and Clay Jenkins and piano from Gary Swerdlow. Nickolas currently attends Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and performs throughout the Chicago suburbs and metropolitan area with his own groups as well as the Foster Meets Brooks Big Band led by John Foster-Brooks. .. .. .. .. ......
