  • Fantasies Flashbacks

People of tomorrow, it is today!

We're writing to let you know that we've just officially launched a web store pre-order for the limited-edition Fantasies Flashbacks package, our first remix album!

The idea is connecting the past with the future. There's vinyl for DJs who only spin vinyl, and for those of us who require a more portable option for our occasional DJ duties (I moonlight as DJ Emotional) there's the PlayButton, a new kind of MP3 player that you can pin on your jacket! Love this.

The name Fantasies Flashbacks was taken from a retrospective project we launched in December 2010 at ilovemetric.com where we invited our fans to send us stories and photos capturing their most memorable Fantasies-era experiences from the past few years. We received thousands of amazing submissions, including Alexandra Tyson's photo from our concert at the 930 Club in Washington, DC, which has become the centerpiece of the artwork for the remix album.

Around the same time, we also started working with the Indaba Music Community on a fan-focused Fantasies remix contest. We made the original stems of the songs from our album available to the world and were overwhelmed by the number and quality of remixes we received. Every day we chose our favourite versions of each song and the result is this collection of Fantasies remixes, which we think are the very best and deserve to be heard.
Here's what the Fantasies Flashbacks deluxe release includes:

    • The 10 original songs from the album Fantasies, each on 7 inch vinyl with our favorite remix for each track
    • A PlayButton MP3 player you can wear, loaded up with the 10 winning remixes
    • A digital download code redeemable for all of the above plus 11 more selected remixes
    • A limited-edition poster, handmade artwork and a custom box to house it all

The official order cut off date is Friday, August 12th 2011. Only a very small number of these limited-edition, deluxe physical packages will be manufactured. They will be sold from our website on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last. Once we hit our preset maximum order quantity (even if it is before August 12th), no further orders can be accepted, sorry! After August 12th, no additional copies of this package will ever be made. Keeping it tight!

With that in mind, if you know you want to pick one up, make your purchase quickly as these are likely to sell fast. Anyone who pre-orders Fantasies Flashbacks from our store will also get an immediate gratification download containing the band's favourite remixes of Help I'm Alive, Gimme Sympathy and Gold Guns Girls. And since we always throw in some extras when you order directly from us, this time it will be an extra 3 previously unreleased remixes not available at retail or anywhere else (bringing the total to 34 songs)!

We're also stocking a few of the Fantasies Flashbacks deluxe packages in our favorite indie record stores so if you want to check at your local, please do! They will be harder to find than usual though as we are making such a small quantity.

Regardless of how or where you buy your copy of Fantasies Flashbacks, you should know that all of Metric's proceeds from the sale of the limited edition package will be donated to CAMH, the Center for Addiction and Mental Health. We had the privilege of playing an acoustic set at one of their fundraisers earlier this year and have developed a great respect and appreciation for the important work that they do. Any purchase you make here will be going to support their continued good work!

Pre-orders from ilovemetric.com will ship on September 30th, 2011. The album will be available in select stores on October 11th, 2011.

    Now, back to the studio!

Today sees the release of Metric's iTunes Originals session in Canada. The exclusive session was recently recorded off the cuff and live off the floor at East West Studios in Los Angeles and features extended versions of a few of Metric's live concert classics, as well as stripped-down tracks and new arrangements. Other songs - like Metric's take on Buffalo Springfield’s “Expecting to Fly” - expand Metric’s usual musical palette with the addition of a string quartet led by Todor Kobakov. The result is a live album which includes 8 songs and a serious 30 minute interview with the band.

Metric's iTunes session can be accessed in Canada at this link.

And you might like to help spread the word about the session and be entered into a contest to win an iPod Touch and signed Metric poster by visiting here.

There's also a brand new video for "Expecting To Fly". Check it out!

  • Metric to Release Exclusive iTunes Session

    Happy New Year!

We're starting 2011 with the release of our iTunes Originals Session! When we were in LA playing the Jimmy Kimmel show in December, we spent a day at East West Studios recording off the cuff and live off the floor. We captured for the first time on tape (not a camera phone) the extended versions of a few of our live concert classics as well as a couple acoustic numbers accompanied by a string quartet led by Todor Kobakov. The result is an exclusive iTunes live album which includes 8 songs and a serious 30 minute interview with the band:

The album is available in the U.S. iTunes store today. .

    You can get it here

We’re working with iTunes in other countries to look at releasing the album everywhere as soon as possible but it's going to take a minute so please stand by for release dates! In the meantime, you can sample two full songs here:

    AND THIS HAPPENED...

Over the holidays, our talented pal Christopher Mills, who previously created a short film for our song "Collect Call", continued the narrative with his gorgeous video for our cover of Neil Young / Buffalo Springfield’s "Expecting to Fly" which will premier next week. The audio was made exclusively available yesterday on Rolling Stone.

We're really excited about these new recordings and want to thank everyone at Apple for making the session happen despite holiday schedule madness; especially Suzanne and Wally and our new fave photog Matt Beard. Here are a few shots from the photo shoot we did at the studio on the day with Matt:

  • Fantasies Flashbacks

The snow is deep in Toronto.  We played our last show of the year a few weeks ago in Miami and since then we've been in righteous hibernation at Giant Studios. It feels good to be back in the neighbourhood. Today we break for the holidays, which means the band will scatter to parts unknown for a while. So far the sessions have been intense. We've got about 12 new songs bouncing off the walls in there and only another thousand hours to go. Which is alright by me. So much happened these past two years with Fantasies, there was no way for me to grasp it all in the moment and still enjoy it all the way. Maybe it's time to brush up on my Buddhism? I don't know. I'm really shit at posting regular blogs and updates because I don't want to let anything interfere with the quality reality unfolding all around me. I guess I'm old fashioned, or maybe it's just selfish, but I still romanticize the 1970s (gasp!) and I don't want to be a reporter, I want to be a musician. The music speaks first. Tweets, blogs + interviews are reserved for my potentially scandalous late night observations, news of our latest accomplishments, psychoanalysis style chats with journos, talking up bands we love and highlighting world events that are way more important than anything we will ever do or say.

But now... we're ready to remember.

For all those times we didn't send vibrations through the online world, we're proud to present a kind of advent calendar of our most resilient Fantasies-era memories, good + bad. We're looking at December 2008-December 2010. We're calling it Fantasies Flashbacks. Every day from now until New Years Eve, we'll be posting something from that portion of the always-gone-forever past. We're hoping you'll join in on the retrospective by sending us photos of yourself + your friends at one of our concerts, stories describing adventures that happened with Fantasies as the soundtrack to your life, classic video clips and whatever you treasure from the last couple years we all spent together dancing in the dark. If you've got something to contribute, go here for further instructions.  Deadline for submissions is December 31st, 2010. In early January, we'll post a selection of the best!  If you're sending photos, don’t forget to include a few words describing the moment, and why it meant something to you. That's the whole point.  Just like that, another year gone and a brand new Metric record on the way. In the words of Jimmy Shaw, "time spent is time owned." And we won't say we haven't lived.

So let's all take a breath and let the Flashbacks begin.  I know Bob Dylan said "don't look back," but that was before most of us were even born and way before the 24-hour news cycle. It's all pretty full on and I could use a little perspective. I'm looking forward to checking out your submissions.

    love,
    emily xo

P.S Weirdly, this is the most effortless post I've written since the days when I was personally mailing out our music from Los Angeles with individual letters enclosed. Maybe it's because I'm not about to walk on stage in 5 minutes. Maybe I'm getting my brain back. Who knows. Let's see if it lasts or I end up opting for old school silence again. Your guess is as good as mine.

    Looking forward to looking back.
