Bio
Vocalist Simon Anthony departed his previous band with idea’s and inspiration, and shortly after meeting guitarist Chris Tompkins in the summer of 2007, the pair embarked upon writing the core of what constitutes Messed Up Joey’s set today. The introduction of various other members ensued, but notably, the arrival of bassist Dan Rickards, and latterly, drummer Gary Pilcher was instrumental in forming their tight bond. That bond is both musical and personal, and is something that they all take as their most important factor. .... With the music world now full of pretence, arrogance and watered-down adaptations of what were once thrilling and cutting-edge musical genres, listeners can find it increasingly hard, impossible even, to find a scene that consists of total originality. Messed Up Joey know this, and do not profess any differently. They are not trying to be the next big thing. Nor are they trying to be the band that spearheads a cult following of some underground genus that only an acute few will understand. All that Messed Up Joey do, is enjoy playing together. This is obvious to see, even to someone totally unfamiliar with the band, when you watch them playing live. .... Messed Up Joey are a good rock band. No ifs or buts. No silly fashion statements. No labels attached saying “Post-Apocalyptic-South-Coast-Hardcore-Emo-Punk”. Simply a bass, a drum kit, some guitar, and a voice. Excellently crafted songs with catchy melody and humming rythumns. They have no Pete Townsend, no John Bonham, no Sting, no Bono - and for those reasons, Messed Up Joey are all the better for it. What they do have in abundance, is stage presence, and more importantly, audience interaction. You will never find vocalist Simon metaphorically turning his back on the crowd during a show. Instead, he invites you into the band, drawing you away from the lure of Kronembourg at the bar, and demonstrating that the band persona, coupled with their wonderfully constructed variety of tunes, and excellent musicianship, really can entertain you on a dark, wet and windy Friday night in Brighton. -
