  • Bio

Steeped in jazz from birth by jazz pianist father, Kitty Drake started gigging at 12, playing in smoky bars in the South of France. She absorbed the influence of legends like Ella and Billie, and her own style emerged - a bittersweet, soft and soulful approach to standards and original material alike. This album is a collaboration with "veteran" producer/arranger Richard Hewson, best known for work with The Beatles ("The Long and Winding Road", Across the Universe"), James Taylor (first album), Carly Simon ("Nobody Does it Better") and the Rah Band ("Clouds Across the Moon" etc). The two met in 2004 in a jazz session in the unusual setting of a Mongolian yurt in a Sussex forest. Richard quickly saw the potential in Kitty's voice to create a new event on the jazz horizon, with an album project he had been thinking about for years. This album (named "Blue Town" after one of the original songs) provides the discerning listener with a fresh approach to classic material, with standards like "My Romance" and "You Go to My Head" contemporized with modern rhythms (such as drum'n'bass and breakbeats). Well-loved gems are handled in unexpected ways - Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name" is turned into a gentle jazzy waltz! There are also 7 quality original songs. Guest musicians include world-renowned saxophonist Mornington Lockett, drummer Simon Lea of Ronnie Scott's fame and Richard's son, Dan Hewson, on trombone. The Urban Soul Orchestra add luscious strings to this rich soundscape. "Blue Town" is at the cutting edge of the new and hugely successful "acoustic jazz" genre.
