  • Bio

Emily Akins completed her first two songs in one day on a $50 keyboard purchased in a garage sale when she was 14 years old. Within weeks she had 10 songs. Seven of the songs became her first cd, "Sad Love Songs and Other Tragic Stuff." The local musician who recorded the cd told Emily to start playing coffee houses. She soon had a following. She only played her songs and the people kept coming back to listen. Emily wanted to add a bigger sound to her music. She wanted a band, but none of the bands in the area wanted a female lead singer. She got a break when a band said she could sing a couple of songs at a New Year's Eve party. One of her coffee house fans was related to one of the band members and persuaded them to give her a chance. During the first practice, the band knew she was not the average singer or performer. Within a few weeks, the band reorganized and Emily became the lead singer in what would become the Roxy Blues Band. Her fans began to call her "Roxy" and she continues to use it as a "stage" or nick name. The band performed and wrote songs together for about three years. They recorded one cd, Big Cold World, before breaking up in 2005. After a failed attempt to form another band in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Roxy, moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in the summer of 2007 to test her music in a little larger town. She has been received well by the local musicians and audiences who are asking for a cd of her newest songs. She is also well known for her Janis Joplin like vocals of Bobby McGee, Piece of My Heart, Mercedes Benz, etc. Discography Sad Love Songs and Other Tragic Stuff, songs and lyrics by Emily Akins Big Cold World, songs and lyrics by Emily Akins and the other members of the Roxy Blues Band: Drew Phegley, Stuart McMillan, Mike Jennings and Tommy Mullins. Shortly after moving to Cincinnati in 2007, she was noticed by Ryan Hickey, Dave Palermo, and Mark Boltin after singing an original blues song she wrote called "Black Train" at Stanly's Pub one night. Chuck Land gave Ryan her number and he called her up to see if she wanted join there band. She was thrilled and said yes. This band was called The Blue Shivers. Members included Ryan Hickey on lead guitar/vocals, Dave Palermo on drums, Mark Boltin on bass, Bryan Westerman on keys/vocals and Emily "Roxy" Westerman on lead vocals/acoustic. They played all around Cincinnati, Kentucky, and Indiana. They were nominated in 2011 for a CEA. After 4 years of being together they broke up and went their separate ways. Emily Westerman has been in a duet with her husband Bryan Westerman since 2008 called the Wild Mountain Berries. They have played all over the Cincinnati and the tri-state area. They have added percussionist and drummer Ben Lee to the mix. They continue to develop into something very unique and soulful.

I am the lead singer of the band and I also play some guitar. Ryan Hicky is Lead guitar/vocalist, Bryan Westerman is Keyboard/vocalist, Dave Palarmo is Drums/backround vocals, and Mark Bolltin is Bass.
