2009: The annual Bob Dylan festival is back bigger than ever, watch out for the warm up gig on Friday 29 May featuring a host of m19's favourite acoustic acts paying their own tribute to Bob Dylan.

The annual three day August Bank holiday weekend special is back by popular demand. It features a host of acts from all over the UK and Europe.

Friday 28 August: This is a tradfest special and features acts who like Bob were inspired by the Clancy brothers and Tommy Makem. If you like a good ol Irish hooley with plenty of Bob Dylan thrown in this is the night for you.

Saturday 29 August: Features a host of Europe's finest Acoustic driven Blues inspired acts playing tribute to Bob Dylan.

Sunday 30 August: We explore Bob Dylan's Country roots and bring the festival to a close with a headlining appearance from Jersey Budd whose new single features Kasbians lead vocalist

BRITAIN'S only festival dedicated to the music of Bob Dylan will be held in an intimate south Manchester bar next month.
The three-day event will welcome devotees and musicians from around the world, particularly Ireland, who will perform tracks from the living legend’s back catalogue.
This year, the festival, at M19 bar in Levenshulme on August bank holiday weekend, has teamed up with its counterpart in Moville, County Donegal, Ireland, and many of the acts will perform at both festivals.
Organiser James Hennigan, from promoter Acousticfest, said: "Bob Dylan has always had a massive connection with Irish artists. He was heavily influenced by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem.
"It is well documented about how Dylan used to hang out in the Irish pub The White Horse in New York, where the Clancys played and he took the tunes of the Clancy songs which were old Irish songs and put in his own words.
"We had a lot of visitors from Ireland last year and are expecting even more this year."
The festival kicks off on Friday, August 28, with a special Irish night, which features Shake the Barley, Bernadette O’Grady, Reckless Elbow, Tina McKevitt and Matt Hegarty, Mickey the Hat, Peter Aldridge and Andy Keeble.
On the Saturday, the festival will celebrate Dylan’s Blues influences, with performances by Bullfrog Brown, Oyana and the Sun Collective, Shimeon, Glyn Bailey & the Splendid Things and other acts.
Country is Sunday’s theme, headlined by Jersey Budd who recently appeared at Glastonbury and has been on tour with Kasabian. Other acts include Kav, Heroes of She, Chris Selman, Bobhowla and Laney Murphy and the Hybrids.
Mickey the Hat said: "I had a great time last year and I am really looking forward to appearing in both of these festivals this year."
Acousticfest, which takes over M19 Bar for acoustic showcases, is gaining a reputation for putting on one of the UK premier nights for such music with acts coming from as far away at Australia to play the south Manchester venue.

Levenshulme to stage UK's first Bob Dylan Festival

Levenshulme’s m19 Bar in Manchester will stage one of the UK’s first Bob Dylan tribute weekend’s when it stages a three day festival at the end of August.

Over forty Acoustic acts from all over the UK and Ireland are flying in for the event which is being held on Friday 29, Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August at Live music venue in Levenshulme village.

The weekend coincides with the release of the Academy Award Nominee film “I,m not there” a film about the life and songs of Bob Dylan. It also marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Bob Dylan's infamous concert at Manchester's Free trade Hall.

As well as acts flying in from Cork, Belfast and Dublin the festival will feature ‘Risa Hall’ who was born in Bob Dylan’s hometown of New York but is now based in Manchester.

One of the acts Emer O’Neill from Belfast said about her appearance in the festival “I am really excited about coming over to Manchester and playing all my favourite Dylan tracks as well as my own stuff. It looks like a great line up for the weekend.”

Bar owner Lawrence Hennigan said about the event “We wanted to do something to mark Bob Dylan’s infamous concert just over forty two years ago at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall where he was called a ‘judas’ for going electric by a member of the audience. A bootleg recording of the concert was released in 1998 and we thought it would be an ideal opportunity to mark its tenth anniversary. Bob is seen by all acoustic artists as the ‘God of Acoustic Music’ and the response from artists wanting to take part in the festival weekend has been fantastic. We have acts coming from all over the UK and as far away as Ireland to perform at the event. He has a universal appeal to people of all ages.”

Acousticfest is fast gaining itself as a reputation for being one of the UK’s premier venues for Acoustic showcases with acts coming from as far away as Australia to play the intimate venue in South Manchester. As well as the Dylan Festival the venue has a full list of events already booked in for its Autumn programme. Highlights include a full weekend of fringe showcases for the inthecity festival in early October, Tom Hingley of ‘Inspiral Carpets’ is performing a one off acoustic show on the 7 November and a Jazz and Blues Festival is scheduled for the end of November.

Bob Dylan played the Free Trade Hall on May 17, 1966, shortly after he "went electric" and at the height of the controversy over his perceived betrayal of his folk roots. It was here that he was famously branded a Judas by a member of the audience. A bootleg recording of that concert was officially released in 1998 as The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert. This was in reference to the name of the incorrect naming of the circulating bootleg before it was released.

To mark the release of that bootleg recording Manchester's premier Acoustic Showcase are staging a weekend of Acoustic acts ppaying tribute to the God that is 'Bob Dylan' in Judas or unplugged mode!!
