UFO research, even of the armchair variety, calls for a high degree of mental flexibility. One can draw up general rules to assist in analysis, but it is necessary to keep an open mind at all times, and be prepared for the exception that cuts across all previous theories. This is especially true of the contactee syndrome, which serves as a crystallization point for all manner of complexes and repressed desires. My own, albeit limited experience has led me to the realization that most contactees are basically no different from the rest of us. They are in fact perfectly ordinary human beings suffering from familiar symptoms, particularly those of boredom, alienation and sheer lack of purpose. But what of the exceptions to this rule? What, for instance of the occultist who strives by an effort of will to establish contact with trans-spatial entities? According to a recent edition of the OTO (Ordo Templi Orientis) journal Khabs, "the central concern of magic is communion with discarnate or extraterrestrial intelligences." It is to this end that much contemporary occultism is predicated. As long ago as 1918 Aleister Crowley conducted a series of experiments in what would today be termed channeling, or "induced contacteeism". (This is of course a simplification of what actually took place, employed here for the sake of convenience.) Since then, several occultists, notably Michael Bertiaux in the 1960s and a group of OTO initiates in the 1970s, have carried out similar magical workings. What is more their efforts in many cases have been crowned with remarkable success -- at least if the official OTO party line is to be believed. This in turn raises quite serious implications for the entire field of UFO research. In order to place these implications in their proper context, it is first of all necessary to say a few words regarding Aleister Crowley's Amalantrah Working, a series of visions and trance-communications received circa January -- March 1918 by the oddly-named Roddie Minor, who was at that time acting as Crowley's Scarlet Woman.Music

[The Revisers wish to acknowledge gratefully the translation of Madame de Steiger, which they have freely quoted.] IT is necessary, my dear brothers, to give you a clear idea of the interior Order; of that illuminated community which is scattered throughout the world, but which is governed by one truth and united in one spirit. This community possesses a School, in which all who thirst for knowledge are instructed by the Spirit of Wisdom itself; and all the mysteries of nature are preserved in this school for the children of light. Perfect knowledge of nature and of humanity is taught in this school. It is from her that all truths penetrate into the world; she is the school of all who search for wisdom, and it is in this community alone that truth and the explantation of all mystery are to be found. It is the most hidden of communities, yet it contains members from many circles; nor is there any Centre of Thought whose activity is not due to the presence of one of ourselves. From all time there has been an exterior school based on the interior one, of which it is but the outer expression. From all time, therefore, there has been a hidden assembly, a society of the Elect, of those who sought for and had capacity for light, and this interior society was the Axle of the R.O.T.A. All that any external order possesses in symbol, ceremony, or rite is the letter expressive outwardly of that spirit of truth which dwelleth in the interior Sanctuary. Nor is the contradiction of the exterior any bar to the harmony of the interior. Hence this Sanctuary, composed of members widely scattered indeed but united by the bonds of perfect love, has been occupied from the earliest ages in building the grand Temple (through the evolution of humanity) by which the reign of L.V.X. will be manifest. This society is in the communion of those who have most capacity for light; they are united in truth, and their Chief is the Light of the World himself, V.V.V.V.V., the One Anointed in Light, the single teacher for the human race, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The interior Order was formed immediately after the first perception of man's wider heritage had dawned upon the first of the adepts; it received from the Masters at first-hand the revelation of the means by which humanity could be raised to its rights and delivered from its misery. It received the primitive charge of all revelation and mystery; it received the key of true science, both divine and natural. But as men multiplied, the frailty of man necessitated an exterior society which veiled the interior one, and concealed the spirit and the truth in the letter, because many people were not capable of comprehending great interior truth. Therefore, interior truths were wrapped in external and perceptible ceremonies, so that men, by the perception of the outer which is the symbol of the interior, might by degrees be enabled safely to approach the interior spiritual truths.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-!<?>. But the inner truth has always been confided to him who in his day had the most capacity for illumination, and he became the sole guardian of the original Trust, as High Priest of the Sanctuary. When it became necessary that interior truths should be enfolded in exterior ceremony and symbol, on account of the real weakness of men who were not capable of hearing the Light of Light, then exterior worship began. It was, however, always the type or symbol of the interior, that is to say, the symbol of the true and Secret Sacrament. The external worship would never have been separated from interior revel but for the weakness of man, which tends too easily to forget the spirit in the letter; but the Masters are vigilant to note in every nation those who are able to receive light, and such persons are employed as agents to spread the light according to man's capacity and to revivify the dead letter. Through these instruments the interior truths of the Sanctuary were taken into every nation, and modified symbolically according to their customs, capacity for instruction, climate, and receptiveness. So that the external types of every religion, worship, ceremonies and Sacred Books in general have more or less clearly, as their object of instruction, the interior truths of the Sanctuary, by which man will be conducted to the universal knowledge of the one Absolute Truth. The more the external worship of a people has remained united with the spirit of esoteric truth, the purer its religion; but the wider the difference between the symbolic letter and the invisible truth, the more imperfect has become the religion. Finally, it may be, the external form has entirely parted from its inner truth, so that ceremonial observances without soul or life have remained alone. In the midst of all this, truth reposes inviolable in the inner Sanctuary. Faithful to the spirit of truth, the members of the interior Order live in silence, but in real activity. Yet, besides their secret holy work, they have from time to time decided upon political strategic action. Thus, when the earth was night utterly corrupt by reason of the Great Sorcery, the Brethren sent Mohammed to bring freedom to mankind by the sword. This being but partially a success, they raised up one Luther to teach freedom of thought. Yet this freedom soon turned into a heavier bondage than before. Then the Brethren delivered unto man the knowledge of nature, and the keys thereof; yet this also was prevented by the Great Sorcery. Now then finally in nameless ways, as one of our Brethren hath it now in mind to declare, have they raised up One to deliver unto men the keys of Spiritual Knowledge, and by His work shall He be judged. This interior community of light is the reunion of all those capable of receiving light, and it is known as the Communion of Saints, the primitive receptacle for all strength and truth, confided to it from all time. By it the agents of L.V.X. were formed in every age, passing from the interior to the exterior, and communicating spirit and life to the dead letter, as already said. This illuminated community is the true school of L.V.X.; it has its Chair, its Doctors; it possesses a rule for students; it has forms and objects for study. It has also its degrees for successive development to greater altitudes. This school of wisdom has been for ever most secretly hidden from the world, because it is invisible and submissive solely to illuminated government. It has never been exposed to the accidents of time and to the weakness of man, because only the most capable were chosen for it, and those who selected made no error. Through this school were developed the germs of all the sublime sciences, which were first received by external schools, then clothed in other forms, and hence degenerated. According to time and circumstances, the society of sages communicated unto the exterior societies their symbolic hieroglyphs, in order to attract man to the great truths of their Sanctuary. But all exterior societies subsist only by virtue of this interior one. As soon as external societies wish to transform a temple of wisdom into a political edifice, the interior society retires and leaves only the letter without the spirit. It is thus that secret external societies of wisdom were nothing but hieroglyphic screens, the truth remaining inviolable in the Sanctuary so that she might never be profaned. In this interior society man finds wisdom and with her All --- not the wisdom of this world, which is but scientific knowledge, which revolves round the outside but never touches the centre (in which is contained all strength), but true wisdom, understanding and knowledge, reflections of the supreme illumination. All disputes, all controversies, all the things belonging to the false cares of this world, fruitless discussions, useless germs of opinions which spread the seeds of disunion, all error, schisms, and systems are banished. Neither calumny nor scandal is known. Every man is honoured. Love alone reigns. We must not, however, imagine that this society resembles any secret society, meeting at certain times, choosing leaders and members, united by special objects. All societies, be what they may, can but come after this interior illuminated circle. This society knows none of the formalities which belong to the outer rings, the work of man. In this kingdom of power all outward forms cease. L.V.X. is the Power always present. The greatest man of his times, the chief himself, does not always know all the members, but the moment when it is necessary that he should accomplish any object he finds them in the world with certainty ready to his hand. This community has no outside barriers. He who may be chosen is as the first; he presents himself among the others without presumption, and he is received by the others without jealousy. It if be necessary that real members should meet together, they find and recognize each other with perfect certainty. No disguise can be used, neither hypocrisy nor dissimulation could hide the characteristic qualities which distinguish the members of this society. All illusion is gone, and things appear in their true form. No one member can choose another; unanimous choice is required. Though not all men are called, many of called are chosen, and that as soon as they become fit for entrance. Any man can look for the entrance, and any man who is within can teach another to seek for it; but only he who is fit can arrive within. Unprepared men occasion disorder in a community, and disorder is not compatible with the Sanctuary. Thus it is impossible to profane the Sanctuary, since admission is not formal but real. Worldly intelligence seeks this Sanctuary in vain; fruitless also will be the efforts of malice to penetrate these great mysteries; all is indecipherable to him who is not ripe; he can see nothing, read nothing in the interior. He who is fit is joined to the chain, perhaps often where he though least likely, and at a point of which he knew nothing himself. To become fit should be the sole effort of him who seeks wisdom. But there are methods by which fitness is attained, for in this holy communion is the primitive storehouse of the most ancient and original science of the human race, with the primitive mysteries also of all science. It is the unique and really illuminated community which is absolutely in possession of the key to all mystery, which knows the centre and source of all nature. It is a society which unites superior strength to its own, and counts its members from more than one world. It is the society whose members form the republic of Genius, the Regent Mother of the whole World. -oOo-, , Pharmaceutical pills A major tightening of the law governing the oversight of drugs companies will be announced today when the government says GlaxoSmithKline delayed informing the authorities that a controversial drug increased the likelihood of suicide among teenagers. The health minister Dawn Primarolo will tell MPs that new legislation will be introduced by the end of the year to ensure drugs companies pass on results of clinical trials as soon as the alarm is raised about one of their medicines. The government is to intervene after a four-year investigation by the drug regulatory body into the way GSK withheld the full results of their trials of the antidepressant Seroxat on children. The trial data, which was finally handed to the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority (MHRA) in May 2003, identified two problems of which the company had been aware as early as 1998: · A higher risk of suicidal behaviour among under 18s using Seroxat rather than a placebo. · Seroxat was ineffective in dealing with depressive illness among under 18s. Primarolo will announce that GSK should have told the MHRA earlier than it did about the results. But GSK will not face criminal prosecutions, she will say, because the legislation in this area is insufficiently clear on whether and when drugs companies should inform the regulator. The minister will announce that new legislation will be introduced by the end of the year placing a greater obligation on companies to disclose results of trials. The MHRA's investigation asked whether GSK had informed the regulatory body in reasonable time. It shows that the drug company had the information about the potentially suicidal effects of Seroxat and concludes that GSK should have informed the MHRA earlier. However, it finds that the company acted within the letter of the law by withholding data that would have shown up a problem. The failure to take stronger action against GSK will anger the many critics of the regulatory body, who say it is not up to the job of policing the pharmaceutical industry. Patients and some doctors have been urging a tough line against GSK ever since the MHRA suddenly announced, in June 2003, that doctors must not give Seroxat to children and under 18s. The agency said it was acting within two weeks of being given the full set of data from trials of Seroxat in children. The statistics contained in those results showed that the drug was no better than a placebo in alleviating depression in children and that those on the drug were more likely to develop suicidal tendencies than those on placebo. In one of the trials, 6.5% of those taking Seroxat became suicidal compared with 1.1% in the placebo group. A leaked internal document from GSK, dated to 1998, said the company would have to "effectively manage the dissemination of these data in order to minimise any potential negative impact". In the United States, GSK was sued by the New York state attorney general, Eliot Spitzer, and settled for $2.5m (£1.25m) and an agreement to publish all its trial results - negative or positive - on a publicly available database. Critics have called for big changes to the MHRA. In its report into the influence of the pharmaceutical industry, the Commons' health select committee expressed concern that the MHRA did not get all the information it needed from manufacturers before it licensed drugs. It called for a new regime of random audits of the raw trial data collected by companies and for more staff to be employed. GSK has always completely rejected allegations that it improperly withheld data on the drug. It said Seroxat had never been approved by EU or US regulators as a medicine for those under 18, and that the company had therefore never marketed the drug for that age section. It also said its trial results had been submitted to regulators and were presented publicly in journals and on its website.Movies
MARS....................................................... The red planet Mars has inspired wild flights of imagination over the centuries, as well as intense scientific interest. Whether fancied to be the source of hostile invaders of Earth, the home of a dying civilization, or a rough-and-tumble mining colony of the future, Mars provides fertile ground for science fiction writers, based on seeds planted by centuries of scientific observations. We know that Mars is a small rocky body once thought to be very Earth-like. Like the other "terrestrial" planets - Mercury, Venus, and Earth - its surface has been changed by volcanism, impacts from other bodies, movements of its crust, and atmospheric effects such as dust storms. It has polar ice caps that grow and recede with the change of seasons; areas of layered soils near the Martian poles suggest that the planet's climate has changed more than once, perhaps caused by a regular change in the planet's orbit. Martian tectonism - the formation and change of a planet's crust - differs from Earth's. Where Earth tectonics involve sliding plates that grind against each other or spread apart in the seafloors, Martian tectonics seem to be vertical, with hot lava pushing upwards through the crust to the surface. Periodically, great dust storms engulf the entire planet. The effects of these storms are dramatic, including giant dunes, wind streaks, and wind-carved features. Scientists believe that 3.5 billion years ago, Mars experienced the largest known floods in the solar system. This water may even have pooled into lakes or shallow oceans. But where did the ancient flood water come from, how long did it last, and where did it go? In May 2002, scientists announced the discovery of a key piece in the puzzle: the Mars Odyssey spacecraft had detected large quantities of water ice close to the surface - enough to fill Lake Michigan twice over. The ice is mixed into the soil only a meter (about 3 feet) below the surface of a wide area near the Martian south pole. Many questions remain. At present, Mars is too cold and its atmosphere is too thin to allow liquid water to exist at the surface for long. More water exists frozen in the polar ice caps, and enough water exists to form ice clouds, but the quantity of water required to carve Mars' great channels and flood plains is not evident on - or near - the surface today. Images from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft suggest that underground reserves of water may break through the surface as springs. The answers may lie deep beneath Mars' red soil. A panoramic view of Mars captured by the Pathfinder lander in 1997. A panoramic view of Mars captured by the Pathfinder lander in 1997. Unraveling the story of water on Mars is important to unlocking its past climate history, which will help us understand the evolution of all planets, including our own. Water is also believed to be a central ingredient for the initiation of life; the evidence of past or present water on Mars is expected to hold clues about past or present life on Mars, as well as the potential for life elsewhere in the universe. And, before humans can safely go to Mars, we need to know much more about the planet's environment, including the availability of resources such as water. Mars has some remarkable geological characteristics, including the largest volcanic mountain in the solar system, Olympus Mons (27 km high and 600 km across); volcanoes in the northern Tharsis region that are so huge they deform the planet's roundness; and a gigantic equatorial rift valley, the Valles Marineris. This canyon system stretches a distance equivalent to the distance from New York to Los Angeles; Arizona's Grand Canyon could easily fit into one of the side canyons of this great chasm. Mars also has two small moons, Phobos and Deimos. Although no one knows how they formed, they may be asteroids snared by Mars' gravity.Television
Brainwashing This is a technique that many use to change the way of thought . It usually goes that one has a certain belief but when others see that it may be different than what everyone else believes whoever is in charge begins to start a brainwashing process in order to make sure that their old beliefs are change to what leads to their own benefit. There have been many corrupt leaders that have used this method as a way to get the civilian population to agree with what ever ideas they have. People have come to call this method of brain washing or otherwise known as mind control to better explain paranormal situations where people who strongly believed in one religion where then converted to something else, these ideas include cults which convince people to join their group even if from the beginning they had thought of it as a bad idea. Using this method on a person can have a serious effect on them; it has been recorded that people who in the past where brain washed never fully recovered the incident even after being away from the people causing the damage. Brain washing causes great damage to your physical and mental health, the method itself is very controversial not everyone has accepted its purpose as something “safe”. Even in the book 1984 by George Orwell, this concept of brain washing takes on a big role. The whole community seems to be a place where everyone has been brainwashed by Big Brother to think of their ideas as the better ones. Roman: Now thats brain washing with a sense of comedy. In 1984 it certainly does take on a more serious tone. Being able to fool people into thinking that a man that wants freedom and peace is the enemy. Telling people that War is Peace and being ignorant is a sign of strength is promoting the government and the government alone. It has managed to make people buy into the idea though. Peter: The government in 1984 is being uptight in what you can do and what you can't do. Either way, people feel as though Big Brother has saved them from the horrors of the past. It is because of Big Brother that they have gotten and lived past the World Wars. If anything Big Brother turned a new page in the history books. This new society is able to detect any revolutionary activities, only without consent of the people. However, the people give their consent with their actions. They support Big Brother all the way and that is why they are brain washed. Bryan: The Brainwashing method is definitely one seen in 1984. Throughout the novel, we see many changes that seem way out of the ordinary from today's world. The fact that Big Brother was somehow able to mess with, and significantly change the minds of the people is fascinating, though it's morally wrong. By doing so, he was successful in making these people think that the crimes he committed are somehow right. He not only gave people an environment in which privacy was not a possibility, with telescreens watching your every step, and at times compelled to obey the screen when an authority figure was speaking, but he took it to the point where many lived in constant fear, and confusion. These people couldn't even think anything negative without the risk of death, weren't allowed the decency of owning a diary, and were even questioning who they were. For instance, Winston Smith has no clear memory of his childhood, and remembers very little of her mother. When he attempts to write in his diary, he is unsure of the date, and his own age! These people are taught to believe that their surroundings are real, and have no exposure to the outside world. The media, in fact, plays no position in the lives of these people, because most have no memory of it, or even it's existence! If any were even to remember of their past, and the thought police was aware of it, survival was perhaps rare. The whole point of brainwashing these people was to make them think Big Brother and his government were heroes, when in reality they were the enemies. If I were to be brainwashed, it would be devastating to not know who I am, or where I'm from, the only thing I would have to live for, is that somehow, my memory came back. Perhaps this is the same way Winston felt, and is probably why he committed some of the "crimes" he did. Brain washing is like an everyday thing today. People specially young people are constantly being brain washed into thinking what some body else wants them to think. The media has people warped around in advertisements and pretty pictures that make you want to be beautiful or strong or what ever the case is. Every time you turn on the tv or the radio or even go outside for a walk, you are being brain washed. You listen to commercials that say they can make you into a superstar or into a model or a body builder. As young people we fall for these ads and commercials and fall into the medias trap of buying us. In 1984 its the same concept but a little different of an idea. In Orwells world the brain washing is more serious because it involves the government like the so called thought police. You have to follow the minsteries rules and do what they say when they say it. Your only free time is two minutes long and you spend it screaming at a telescreen. Its all a part of brain washing. Sangay- "WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH." is brain washing. people in 1984 are being told thats not true. their being fooled to believe something, planing with their minds. i believe hypnoses is brain washing. people are being hypnotised into being different or finding out information. even though most of the times hypnoses are used for help, for example if you have fear of something, it helps you get over it. but what ever it is, it still people or things playing with your mind/ brain washing. in the case of 1984 its weird because of all those things like thought police, thought crime. Francois: Though it is not in clear text, that the people in 1984 are being brain washed it is very vague that they are. Going though basically the same task everyday and being placed in this position where they feel as though they're being washed every seconds, it causes the people to be on point every second not knowing what to expect from big brother. With this brain washing it causes Winston mind to be his worse enemy. Not knowing what to do this forces his to be paranoid constantly fearing that someone is on his back. One of the key factors that I feel helps the brain washing process successful, is that the government doesn't allow them to know a sense of time and year. I feel with this is causes them to focus more on whats put in front of them. Katia: I feel that Winston has a gift. I think he has something that most people in 1984 don't have. Winston has this way of seeing the world and government differently than any other normal person would. He doesn't let the government "brainwash" him, because he knows that something is up. He knows that Big Brother isn't all that nice. However, it is very risky for Winston to have such ideas about the government. If the Thought Police catch him, then he could be persecuted. This is precisely why everybody else in 1984 has nothing bad to say about the government, because a few words can cost them their lives. As Winston says, "Thoughtcrime does not entail death: thoughtcrime is death." (27) Mathew: In the book "1984", there are three main forms of brainwashing. For the perfection and the success of a society the government introduced many things that were meant to brainwash the population. These things affected the people greatly in the way that they were being under control and did not even know it. Big brother which is the head of the society introduces many brainwashing factors that are only successful because the people don’t know about them. Everyday there is two minutes hate, which is two minutes where passionate rallies are held to turn the community against the governments enemies such as Brotherhood and Golstein. These rallies work with the government to convince the people that the enemies the government has are also the community’s enemies. Another way that the government used brainwashing to gain control of the population was with the language of new speak which was created to limit the thought of the people. The government did not want anyone thinking freely and of different forms of control so they created a language where the wording limited the thought of people therefore controlling them. The last major part of control that the government on the people was erasing the past. The government erased the concept of time so the people would not be unrest. This control of eliminating the past gave the government a great power over the people. Vincent- To be honest, brainwashing is all that Big Brother is all about. The story basically starts with everyone being brainwashed by Big Brother to begin with. The one who rebels against it all is Winston. Everybody lives with telescreens, thought police and posters of Big Brother is watching you everywhere and is fine with the way they're living. They at least pretend that they're fine with it because they have to put a fake face on in front of the telescreen so they don't think that you have something in your mind like a thoughtcrime. They're brainwashed in a lot of ways but they think that they're under so much control because it's better for them, they think is for there own good when is really not. Is really just Big Brother trying to be under too much control. He even erases the people's memory because he doesn't want them to remember what life was like before he existed as ruler. To him, nothing existed before he ruled, it was always his way. If the people have some kind of memory of what life was like they would go against him and rule him out. The children are born into this world and they become little spies, even their own parents would be scared for them. And they are down with Big Brother and everything that has to do with his control over people. If they see someone suspicious, they will turn them in to the thought police. Little kids could be the best spies because they're so small and could sneak anywhere, they're also little kids which would make them curious anyway. They don't even have to be brainwashed because they were born and raised into a cruel world. they even enjoy the thought of people getting vaporized for going against Big Brother or people getting hanged because of a little "crime." Brainwashing happens all the time. Is a big subject everywhere and it happens because people get so vulnerable at times. They get so vulnerable that they let people take advantage and don't even know it. Sharon: Everybody in Oceania is brainwashed. I guess you can say that Winston is kind of rebelling against Big Brother, but he doesn't show it. He's scared of getting vaporized, but he also does things that would cause him to be vaporized even faster. Newspeak is something that Big Brother uses to brainwash the people of Oceania. They all basically live with telescreens and thought police and all these things and they're going to live with it no matter what. Big Brother wants Newspeak to exist so that people wouldn't be able to think. Not only that, but that wouldn't even have to think about anything. Like Vincent said, he is scared that people would realize the life that they are living so he limits their train of thought. The Newspeak Dictionary gets smaller every year so they basically just eliminate words that aren't "necessary." Syme is one of those people who think that the destruction of words is a beautiful thing. He knows that Winston isn't all for it like everyone else in Oceania, but he doesn't really say anything. If he really wanted to, he could turn Winston in. Instead of thinking that it would be horrible to express how they feel, it's probably the last thing on everybody's mind. Instead, they think it's great because that way, people won't get vaporized for having any bad thoughts. It's to limit the people's thoughts and the people, like Syme, think it's great because that way people wouldn't get vaporized. That way, there wouldn't be any need for any thought police by the year 2050Books
Evolution of the Zodiac................................... Here follow some thoughts on the Evolution of the Zodiac as it necessarily parallels or reflects the evolution of man. The Zodiac is an archetype, yet within the limitations of time and space, we only approximate this archetype in a progressive manner in our circle of experience. Remember that when we speak about omitting certain signs from this circle, it is not because they are not there, but because man was not able to respond to those influences in an appropriate manner due to his mechanism of response. Needless to say, the great Lives of the Zodiac relate us to the Mind of God and take us through the Heart and Soul of Deity right into the very highest Head centre. Under the will of Deity and the unalterable energy at the heart of the manifested zodiac, may we resurrect and achieve continuity, assuming our rightful place within Him in Whom we live and move and have our being. OM 1. Evolution of the Zodiac: a. Zodiac of 8 signs. In early Lemuria there was the zodiac of 8 signs. It was governed by Scorpio and Scorpio also marked the end of that zodiac. This particular zodiac with certain additions, governed till some 20 million years ago and concerned races 3.1 - 3.4 (the Lemurian rootrace, 1-4 subraces). b. Zodiac of 10 signs. In later Lemuria (races 3.4 - 3.7) and early Atlantis (races 4.1 - 4.3) the zodiac of 10 signs applied. It was governed by Capricorn and Capricorn also marked the end of that zodiac. This zodiac in its certain mutations applied from some 20 million years ago to 5-10 million years ago. c. Zodiac of 12 signs. Towards the middle of Atlantis (races 4.3 - 4.5) there came a “new heaven” with the zodiac of 12 signs. It was governed by Pisces and Pisces also marks the end of the zodiac. This zodiac is still with us here in the Aryan race (5.5 - 5.7), as it was already in place and present at the seeding of the Aryan rootrace in Atlantis (4.5). It may, therefore, be up to some 5-10 million years old. 2. Mutation in the circle of experience: a. Circle of 8 signs - this zodiac covered the developments in ancient times of early Lemuria. Signs omitted were; Leo, Virgo, Aquarius, Pisces. Sagittarius (and the Galactic Centre) was the beginning of the circle of experience and Scorpio marked the end (also at the Galactic Centre). Man was the beast, and yet it was a period of change as there was the beginning of a new orientation. This wheel was symbolised by the image of a man-centaur with the tail of a scorpion. b. Circle of 9 signs - this was an intermediate cycle relating to the subjective approach of Hierarchy, via Sagittarius, 21,688,345 years ago, and resulting in individualisation (Leo and/or Virgo added). This would mark the potent Sagittarius/Leo activity during the subjective approach. The number 9 of the initiating sign Sagittarius and the 9 signs related to this zodiac would symbolise the period of gestation and the tiny babe in Virgo, which animal-man was. This wheel was also symbolised by the image of a man-centaur with the tail of a scorpion. c. Circle of 10 signs - this wheel only came in gradually after individualisation in Lemuria (overlapping into early Atlantis); it was a new cycle of effort for the new man. Effort, strain, struggle; the fight with the forces native to the underworld, or the strenuous conditions entailed by the tests of discipleship or initiation—these are distinctive of experience in Capricorn. The outcome from the earlier periods led to the inclusion of the sign Leo and also Virgo (for the mature babe). The circle of 10 signs was then the basic wheel and Aries now marked the beginning due to the revolutionary events and Capricorn was the end of the circle (the sign of birth and initiation), thus omitting Aquarius and Pisces. Capricorn was the boat (the arc) constellation, the makara/crocodile, the aquatic animal that crossed the waters of Aquarius/Pisces. This in a different context symbolises the galaxy stretching across space and the vault of heaven. Capricorn also necessarily relates to the fifth or Capricorn Hierarchy, which was highly involved in these events. However, developments were not very smooth in Lemuria, and this affected the wheel of experience. For example, there were those Angels (I call them the Mañanadevas), or the Sons of Mind, who did not incarnate into their destined forms at the appointed time and, therefore, did not follow the law. Their procrastination or refusal to incarnate led to the "sin of the mindless." Already prepared and ready to receive them were the forms of a slated batch of animal-men that had already separated sexually. These Amanasa (mindless beings) defiled themselves and begat offspring with other lower and undesirable forms. This led to karma for the Angels, as they had broken the law of progress, and they therefore had to deal with forms less suitable. The Secret Doctrine tells us: The animals separated first. They began to breed. The two-fold man separated also. He said, “Let us as they; let us unite and make creatures.” They did. "And those that had no spark took huge she-animals unto them. They begat upon them dumb races. Dumb they were themselves." "They (the sexes) had already separated before the ray of divine reason had enlightened the dark region of their hitherto slumbering minds, and had sinned. That is to say, they had committed evil unconsciously by producing an effect which was unnatural."i(See also The Secrete Doctrine, 721, 728.) These developments had repercussions on the Zodiac, resulting in certain mutations. The astrological scientists in later Lemuria and early Atlantis had divergent opinions on what signs to include in the circle of experience that mainly consisted of 10 signs at that time. There were two main schools of thought, one which included 10 signs and another later school that encompassed 11 signs. The earlier school of astrologers emphasised the events surrounding the Sin of the Mindless and its consequences. They therefore omitted the signs of Gemini and Libra, but included all the other signs. The absence, or omission, of Gemini and Libra symbolised the mind being in a state of latency, and Hermes/Thoth not being present. To review, back in Lemuria certain signs of the zodiac were omitted from the zodiacal wheel as man could not respond to them. This resulted in a zodiac of only 8 signs at the time. It was only as a bulk of human units individualised and the seed of christhood was planted in them that the influence of the two zodiacal signs of Leo and Virgo began. These signs were then recognised by humanity, leading to a zodiac wheel of 10 signs. Before the zodiacal influence of Leo and Virgo were recognized that area in the heavens was certainly not a blank spot. Having pondered the question of the evolution of the Zodiac--from 8 to 10 to 12 signs--paralelling the development of man, I would say that there are many ways to approach this very fundamental question, some of which are complementary. One such approach would be to simply divide the heavens into 8 or 10 segments instead of 12, and thus having certain signs spanning 45 degrees or 36 degrees, instead of 30 degrees. This would be a simple and elegant mathematical solution, yet with little or no regard for the qualitative regions formed in the heavens where the Lords of the Constellations reside or project Their essence. So, having considered many options, the conclusion that has emerged in my mind is that in those early days the omitted signs of Leo, Virgo, Aquarius and Pisces were all "veiled" or "hidden" by certain other subsidiary and basic layers of the heavens, relating to these signs. For Leo and Virgo the veil consisted of Hydrus, the great Sea-Serpent, which straddles both of these constellations. For Pisces it was Cetus, the Whale holding Jonas captive, or Tiamat, the Sea-Monster. For Aquarius, the glyph of the sign itself clearly indicates its serpentine connections and, in those days, it was the serpent spewing forth fire and water. The nature and the theme of the veil is, therefore, not to be mistaken--the "Serpent energy" and the Serpent in its many shapes is clearly indicated. It is the Serpent that represents manas, the spark of mind, and the knowledge of right and wrong, leading to immortality and godliness. This is so if rightly handled as it can be both a killer and a healer. Therefore, through these signs, making a rift in the zodiac wheel (the perfect Eden), the Serpent was able to reach man and whisper in his ears to eat from the fruits of the tree of knowledge. And thus he did. In a manner of speaking, the signs of Leo, Virgo, Aquarius and Pisces are the Serpent, Eve, Adam and God respectively. Humanity evolved over time, as did the zodiac from 8 signs to 10 and then to 12 signs-- the serpents and sea-monsters, became the crocodiles, the Makara and the Dragons of Wisdom. The remnants of the earlier developments are still with us today. They are present and primarily manifest within the zodiac wheel as the 13th sign – the Serpent-Bearer. And so we wrestle, Quote: "In ancient days, as you may perchance have heard, there were only ten signs, and—at that time— Capricorn marked the end of the zodiacal wheel, and not Pisces as is at this time the case. The two signs of Aquarius and Pisces were not incorporated in the signs for the simple and sufficient reason that humanity could not respond to their peculiar influences; the vehicles of contact and the mechanisms for responses were not adequately developed. Originally, there were eight signs; then there were ten and now twelve. 1. In Lemurian days, during the early period of animal man and before humanity appeared on earth, in the interim period of development, eight signs influenced the planet and the kingdoms of nature found upon it. There was no response to the influences of Leo and Virgo. The mystery of the Sphinx did not exist and these two signs were not then part of the zodiacal wheel. Then individualisation took place and the seed of Christhood [Page 160] was planted in man and these two signs began to influence humanity, and gradually that influence was recognised and the zodiac was then known to have ten signs. The Mutable Cross dominated, but it was then the Tau, for Pisces was lacking and only Gemini, Virgo and Sagittarius were evidenced. Aries to Capricorn marked the circle of experience. 2. In Atlantean days, man had become so responsive to the planetary and solar influence that the door of initiation into hierarchical experience was opened and two more signs were added. These two signs were the higher correspondences of Leo and Virgo and were the polar opposites of these two: Aquarius and Pisces. Their influence became active and effective and thus they formed part of the zodiacal wheel because man began to respond to their potencies. It then became possible for the Fixed Cross to function esoterically in the life of humanity, and the first reversals of the wheel in the life of the advanced men of the period took place. It was this reversal which was the true cause of the great contest or battle between the Lords of the Dark Face (as they are called in The Secret Doctrine) and the Lords of Light—a contest which is today persisting. Certain men then reached the stage of discipleship wherein they could consciously mount the Fixed Cross and be prepared for a major initiation. This the Forces of Materiality and of Obstruction (as they are sometimes called) fought and the battle was fought out and conditioned in the sign Scorpio. 3. Today, in Aryan times, a similar conflict upon a higher turn of the spiral is taking place. The reason is that certain world disciples and initiates have reached the point in their unfoldment wherein they are ready to [Page 161] mount the Cardinal Cross and take some of the higher initiations. So the conflict is on between humanity (under the control of the Lords of Materiality) and the Hierarchy (under the control of the Forces of Light and Love), and right before our eyes the battle is being waged. The influences of the twelve signs of the zodiac (particularly of seven of the signs) are being engaged, for today men of all types and rays are responsive to their influences and are implicated in some form or another in the affair." (1) Some additional thoughts on the thirteenth sign: Ophiuchus and Scorpius overlap. The Sun passes through the area in the sky assigned to Ophiuchus approximately between November 30 -- December 18. The constellation stretches beyond these dates though, but the Sun is then actually passing through other constellations and there is only an overlap effect. Its energies may still be effective though as “background” radiation. This constellation is found at the Crossroads--the intersection between different realities, close to the root or laya-point at the Galactic Center. There the life- and death-giving forces are equally potent and this we need to handle carefully as we struggle from the unreal to the real and from death to immortality. It connects us with the deep fires and indicates a fundamental aspect of our development in this solar system. Due to precession, the solstices and equinoxes will move and the winter solstice point will be precessing through the Serpent-Bearer during the age of Aquarius. Indeed the constellation is very relevant and the extent to which we are able to handle the serpent, will determine our ability to serve and become victorius. This will activate and release the serpent power of the kundalini in a more potent manner eventually. Ophiucus stands between Scorpio and Sagittarius in the heavens and is primarily linked to one of the three decanates of Scorpio. It signifies tests and trials and the overcoming of temptation and hence will be important in the life of the disciple, struggling to achieve mental polarisation before the dweller is faced around the third initiation. The temptations of the Christ are very suggestive in this respect, struggling as we do with maya, glamour and illusion--the flesh, the world and the devil. It could be said that the three constellations of the Centaur, the Serpent-bearer, and the Archer form a triangle around the Galactic Center, these constellations always being aware of the goal, the centre of gravity, the sacral, the intersection of male and female, of Sun and Moon and close to the point of origin. They never lose the scent of this origin and are always able to orient and move in the right direction. We fight to retain this knowledge within ourselves; as the centaur we struggle with maya, as the Serpent-bearer we seek to overcome glamour and as the Archer we pierce the veils of illusion. Chiron, the wise centaur is of course related to all these three constellations. His connection with the Serpent-bearer becomes clear as we understand that this constellation is also known as Aesculapius who was taught the arts of medicine and healing by Chiron. He learned to cure illness and also the power to restore life from death. He gives the elixir of life to Orion who was stung by the Scorpion. He tramples on the Scorpion and they set together whilst Orion is resurrected in the east. Here we see the medical ability, the power to restore and regenerate also found with Scorpio where he rules one of the decanates.Heroes
-/DRX-VS_DRDEATH<?>.!.MovieMaidens.com is dedicated to the most beautiful classic actresses during the first 50 years of Hollywood...remembering them when they were young and beautiful. We are so sick of seeing history's most beautiful female actors portrayed as old women. How many times have you seen Joan Crawford as a 50 year old with enormous eyebrows and clown-like lipstick, Bette Davis as a shaky old woman with a cigarette, Elizabeth Taylor at 220 pounds, or Shirley MacLaine as a psychic nutcase? These actresses burst onto the Hollywood scene as beautiful young women, and they should be remembered as the gorgeous girls that they were. We want everyone to experience the beauty of these women, to encourage you to watch their old movies, and to fall in love with them, as moviegoers did, when they were young.

About me:
(10°=1□): Beyond the comprehension of the lower degrees. An Ipsissimus is free from limitations and necessity and lives in perfect balance with the manifest universe. Essentially, the highest mode of attainment. This grade corresponds to Kether on the Tree of Life. Ipsissimus is quite hard to translate directly from Latin to English, but it is essentially the superlative of "self", translating rather approximately to "His most Selfness," or "self-est." (c.f. generalissimo for the same superlative form in use for a grade from same Latin root.) Crowley named as a condition of this grade the trance Nirodha-samapatti,[15] which reduces heartbeat and other life functions to the bare minimum; evidence of this attainment is only achieved when the stool of the Master is manifested in the perfected Form of the thousand-petaled Sacred Lotus. Theravada Buddhist monks traditionally attain nirodha-samapatti by producing the aforementioned Formless States one after the other, and perceiving in each what they call the Three Characteristics of all existence: sorrow or tendency towards sorrow, change or unreliability, and insubstantiality or lack of self.[16] Crowley and the A∴A∴ however seek to replace this threefold view with the quest for balance as both a motive for discipline and the means of achieving their end goal.[17] In Liber B vel Magi they urge the Magus seeking further progress to identify the Buddhist Three Characteristics with the opposite states. "Wherein Sorrow is Joy, and Change is Stability, and Selflessness is Self." Crowley's version of nirodha includes "seeing first the truth and then the falsity of the Three Characteristics" according to his published theory[18] -- in other words, he uses the goal of Theravada to aid in the joyous affirmation of the Eternal return. The Ipsissimus should keep the achievement of this final grade secret even from the rest of the Order and continue with the work of the Magus, while expressing the nature of an Ipsissimus in word and deed.[19] Earlier yet his soul had come To the Hill of Martyrdom, {37} Where the charred and crookèd stake Like a black envenomed snake By the hangman's hands is thrust Through the wet and writhing dust, Never black and never dried Heart's blood of a suicide. He had plucked the hazel rod From the rude and goatish god, Even as the curved moon's waning ray Stolen from the King of Day. He had learnt the elvish sign; Given the Token of the Nine: Once to rave, and once to revel, Once to bow before the devil, Once to swing the thurible, Once to kiss the goat of hell, Once to dance the aspen spring, Once to croak, and once to sing, Once to oil the savoury thighs Of the witch with sea-green eyes With the unguents magical. Oh the honey and the gall Of that black enchanter's lips As he croons to the eclipse Mingling that most puissant spell Of the giant gods of hell With the four ingredients Of the evil elements; {38} Ambergris from golden spar, Musk of ox from Mongol jar, Civet from a box of jade, Mixed with fat of many a maid Slain by the inchauntments cold Of the witches wild and old. He had crucified a toad In the basilisk abode, Muttering the Runes averse Mad with many a mocking curse. He had traced the serpent sigil In his ghastly virgin vigil. Sursum cor! the elfin hill, Where the wind blows deadly chill From the world that wails beneath Death's black throat and lipless teeth. There he had stood -- his bosom bare --- Tracing Life upon the Air With the crook and with the flail Lashing forward on the gale, Till its blade that wavereth Like the flickering of Death Sank before his subtle fence To the starless sea of sense. Now at last the man is come Haply to his halidom. {39} Surely as he waves his rod In a circle on the sod Springs the emerald chaste and clean From the duller paler green. Surely in the circle millions Of immaculate pavilions Flash upon the trembling turf Like the sea-stars in the surf --- Millions of bejewelled tents For the warrior sacraments. Vaster, vaster, vaster, vaster, Grows the stature of the master; All the ringed encampment vies With the infinite galaxies. In the midst a cubic stone With the Devil set thereon; Hath a lamb's virginal throat; Hath the body of a stoat; Hath the buttocks of a goat; Hath the sanguine face and rod Of a goddess and a god! Spell by spell and pace by pace! Mystic flashes swing and trace Velvet soft the sigils stepped By the silver-starred adept. Back and front, and to and fro, Soul and body sway and flow In vertiginous caresses To imponderable recesses, {40} Till at last the spell is woven, And the faery veil is cloven That was Sequence, Space, and Stress Of the soul-sick consciousness. "Give thy body to the beasts! Give thy spirit to the priests! Break in twain the hazel rod On the virgin lips of God! Tear the Rosy Cross asunder! Shatter the black bolt of thunder! Such the swart ensanguine kiss Of the resolute abyss!" Wonder-weft the wizard heard This intolerable word. Smote the blasting hazel rod On the scarlet lips of God; Trampled Cross and rosy core; Brake the thunder-tool of Thor; Meek and holy acolyte Of the priestly hells of spite, Sleek and shameless catamite Of the beasts that prowl by night! Like a star that streams from heaven Through the virgin airs light-riven, From the lift there shot and fell An admirable miracle. {41} Carved minute and clean, a key Of purest lapis-lazuli More blue than the blind sky that aches (Wreathed with the stars, her torturing snakes), For the dead god's kiss that never wakes; Shot with golden specks of fire Like a virgin with desire. Look, the levers! fern-frail fronds Of fantastic diamonds, Glimmering with ethereal azure In each exquisite embrasure. On the shaft the letters laced, As if dryads lunar-chaste With the satyrs were embraced, Spelled the secret of the key: Sic pervenias. And he Went his wizard way, inweaving Dreams of things beyond believing. When he will, the weary world Of the senses closely curled Like a serpent round his heart Shakes herself and stands apart. So the heart's blood flames, expanding, Strenuous, urgent, and commanding; And the key unlocks the door Where his love lives evermore. She is of the faery blood; All smaragdine flows its flood. {42} Glowing in the amber sky To ensorcelled porphyry. She hath eyes of glittering flake Like a cold grey water-snake. She hath naked breasts of amber Jetting wine in her bed-chanber, Whereof whoso stoops and drinks Rees the riddle of the Sphinx. She hath naked limbs of amber Whereupon her children clamber. She hath five navels rosy-red From the five wounds of God that bled; Each wound that mothered her still bleeding, And on that blood her babes are feeding. Oh! like a rose-winged pelican She hath bred blessed babes to Pan! Oh! like a lion-hued nightingale She hath torn her breast on thorns to avail The barren rose-tree to renew Her life with that disastrous dew, Building the rose o' the world alight With music out of the pale moonlight! O She is like the river of blood That broke from the lips of the bastard god, When he saw the sacred mother smile On the ibis that flew up the foam of Nile Bearing the limbs unblessed, unborn, That the lurking beast of Nile had torn! {43} So (for the world is weary) I These dreadful souls of sense lay by. I sacrifice these impure shoon To the cold ray of the waning moon. I take the forkŠd hazel staff, And the rose of no terrene graff, And the lamp of no olive oil With heart's blood that alone may boil. With naked breast and feet unshod I follow the wizard way to God. Wherever he leads my foot shall follow; Over the height, into the hollow, Up to the caves of pure cold breath, Down to the deeps of foul hot death, Across the seas, through the fires, Past the palace of desires; Where he will, whether he will or no, If I go, I care not whither I go. For in me is the taint of the faery blood. Fast, fast, its emerald flood Leaps within me, violent rude Like a bestial faun's beatitude. In me the faery blood runs hard: My sires were a druid, a devil, a bard, A beast, a wizard, a snake and a satyr; For --- as my mother said --- what does it matter? {44} She was a fay, pure of the faery; Queen Morgan's daughter by an aery Demon that came to Orkney once To pay the Beetle his orisons. So, it is I that writhe with the twitch Of the faery blood, and the wizard itch To attain a matter one may not utter Rather than sink in the greasy splutter Of Britons munching their bread and butter; Ailing boys and coarse-grained girls Grown to sloppy women and brutal churls. So, I am off with staff in hand To the endless light of the nameless land. Darkness spreads its sombre streams, Blotting out the elfin dreams. I might haply be afraid, Were it not the Feather-maid Leads me softly by the hand, Whispers me to understand. Now (when through the world of weeping Light at last starrily creeping Steals upon my babe-new sight, Light --- O light that is not light!) On my mouth the lips of her Like a stone on my sepulchre Seal my speech with ecstasy, Till a babe is born of me {45} That is silent more than I; For its inarticulate cry Hushes as its mouth is pressed To the pearl, her honey breast; While its breath divinely ripples The rose-petals of her nipples, And the jetted milk he laps From the soft delicious paps, Sweeter than the bee-sweet showers In the chalice of the flowers, More intoxicating than All the purple grapes of Pan. Ah! my proper lips are stilled. Only, all the world is filled With the Echo, that dips over Like the honey from the clover. Passion, penitence, and pain Seek their mother's womb again, And are born the triple treasure, Peace and purity and pleasure. --- Hush, my child, and come aloft Where the stars are velvet soft! ALEISTER CROWLEY. {46}Who I'd like to meet:

The conclusion of our researches last week was that the ultimate Yoga which gives emancipation, which destroys the sense of separate- ness which is the root of Desire, is to be made by the concentration of every element of one's being, and annihilating it by intimate combustion with the universe itself. I might here note, in parenthesis, that one of the difficulties of doing this is that all the elements of the Yogi increase in every way exactly as he progresses, and by reason of that progress. However, it is no use crossing our bridges until we come to them, and we shall find that by laying down serious scientific principles based on universal experience they will serve us faithfully through every stage of the journey. 2. When I first undertook the investigation of Yoga, I was fortunately equipped with a very sound training in the fundamental principles of modern science. I saw immediately that if we were to put any common sense into the business (science is nothing but instructed common sense), the first thing to do was to make a com- parative study of the different systems of mysticism. It was immedi- ately apparent that the results all over the world were identical. They were masked by sectarian theories. The methods all over the world were identical; this was masked by religious prejudice and local custom. But in their quiddity -- identical! This simple principle proved quite sufficient to disentangle the subject from the extraordinary complexities which have confused its expression. 3. When it came to the point of preparing a simple analysis of the matter, the question arose: what terms shall we use? The mysticisms of Europe are hopelessly muddled; the theories have entirely overlaid the methods. The Chinese system is perhaps the most sublime and the most simple; but, unless one is born a Chinese, the symbols are of really unclimbable difficulty. The Buddhist system is in some ways the most complete, but it is also the most recondite. The words are excessive in length and difficult to commit to memory; and generally speaking, one cannot see the wood for the trees. But from the Indian system, overloaded though it is by accretions of every kind, it is comparatively easy to extract a method which is free from unnecessary and undesirable implications, and to make an interpretation of it intelligible to, and acceptable by, European minds. It is this system, and this interpretation of it, which I propose to put before you. 4. The great classic of Sanskrit literature is the Aphorisms of Patanjali. He is at least mercifully brief, and not more than ninety or ninety-five percent of what he writes can be dismissed as the ravings of a disordered mind. What remains is twenty-four carat gold. I now proceed to bestow it. 5. It is said that Yoga has eight limbs. Why limbs I do not know. But I have found it convenient to accept this classification, and we can cover the ground very satisfactorily by classing our remarks under these eight headings. 6. These headings are: -- 1. Yama. 2. Niyama. 3. Asana. 4. Pranayama. 5. Pratyahara. 6. Dharana. 7. Dhyana. 8. Samadhi. Any attempt to translate these words will mire us in a hopeless quag of misunderstanding. What we can do is to deal with each one in turn, giving at the outset some sort of definition or description which will enable us to get a fairly complete idea of what is meant. I shall accordingly begin with an account of Yama. Attend! Perpend! Transcent! 7. Yama is the easiest of the eight limbs of Yoga to define, and corresponds pretty closely to our word 'control.' When I tell you that some have translated it 'morality,' you will shrink appalled and aghast at this revelation of the brainless baseness of humanity. The word 'control' is here not very different from the word 'inhibition' as used by biologists. A primary cell, such as the amoeba, is in one sense completely free, in another completely passive. All parts of it are alike. Any part of its surface can ingest its food. If you cut it in half, the only result is that you have two perfect amoebae instead of one. How far is this condition removed in the evolutionary scale from trunk murders! Organisms developed by specialising their component structures have not achieved this so much by an acquisition of new powers, as by a restriction of part of the general powers. Thus, a Harley Street specialist is simply an ordinary doctor who says: 'I won't go out and attend to a sick person; I won't, I won't, I won't.' Now what is true of cells is true of all already potentially specialised organs. Muscular power is based upon the rigidity of bones, and upon the refusal of joints to allow any movement in any but the appointed directions. The more solid the fulcrum, the more efficient the lever. The same remark applies to moral issues. These issues are in themselves perfectly simple; but they have been com- pletely overlaid by the sinister activities of priests and lawyers. There is no question of right or wrong in any abstract sense about any of these problems. It is absurd to say that it is 'right' for chlorine to combine enthusiastically with hydrogen, and only in a very surly way with oxygen. It is not virtuous of a hydra to be hermaphrodite, or contumacious on the part of an elbow not to move freely in all directions. Anybody who knows what his job is has only one duty, which is to get that job done. Anyone who possesses a function has only one duty to that function, to arrange for its free fulfilment. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. 8. We shall not be surprised therefore if we find that the perfectly simple term Yama (or Control) has been bedevilled out of all sense by the mistaken and malignant ingenuity of the pious Hindu. He has interpreted the word 'control' as meaning compliance with certain fixed proscriptions. There are quite a lot of prohibitions grouped under the heading of Yama, which are perhaps quite necessary for the kind of people contemplated by the Teacher, but they have been senselessly elevated into universal rules. Everyone is familiar with the prohibition of pork as an article of diet by Jews and Mohammedans. This has nothing to do with Yama, or abstract right- eousness. It was due to the fact that pork in eastern countries was infected with the trichina; which killed people who ate pork impro- perly cooked. It was no good telling the savages that fact. Any way, they would only have broken the hygienic command when greed overcame them. The advice had to be made a universal rule, and supported with the authority of a religious sanction. They had not the brains to believe in trichinosis; but they were afraid of Jehovah and Jehannum. Just so, under the grouping of Yama we learn that the aspiring Yogi must become 'fixed in the non-receiving of gifts,' which means that if anyone offers you a cigarette or a drink of water, you must reject his insidious advances in the most Victorian manner. It is such nonsense as this which brings the science of Yoga into contempt. But it isn't nonsense if you consider the class of people for whom the injunction was promulgated; for, as we will be shown later, preliminary to the concentration of the mind is the control of the mind, which means the calm of the mind, and the Hindu mind is so constituted that if you offer a man the most trifling object, the incident is a landmark in his life. It upsets him completely for years. In the East, an absolutely automatic and thoughtless act of kindness to a native is liable to attach him to you, body and soul, for the rest of his life. In other words, it is going to upset him; and as a budding Yogi he has got to refuse it. But even the refusal is going to upset him quite a lot; and therefore he has got to become 'fixed' in refusal; that is to say, he has got to erect by means of habitual refusal a psychological barrier so strong that he can really dismiss the temptation without a quiver, or a quaver, or even a demisemiquaver of thought. I am sure you will see that an absolute rule is necessary to obtain this result. It is obviously impossible for him to try to draw the line between what he may receive and what he may not; he is merely involved in a Socratic dilemma; whereas if he goes to the other end of the line and accepts everything, his mind is equally upset by the burden of the responsibility of dealing with the things he has accepted. However, all these considerations do not apply to the average European mind. If someone gives me 200,000 pounds sterling, I automatically fail to notice it. It is a normal circumstance of life. Test me! 9. There are a great many other injunctions, all of which have to be examined independently in order to find whether they apply to Yoga in general, and to the particular advantage of any given stu- dent. We are to exclude especially all those considerations based on fantastic theories of the universe, or on the accidents of race or climate. For instance, in the time of the late Maharajah of Kashmir, mahsir fishing was forbidden throughout his territory; because, when a child, he had been leaning over the parapet of a bridge over the Jhilam at Srinagar, and inadvertently opened his mouth, so that a mahsir was able to swallow his soul. It would never have done for a Sahib -- a Mlecha! -- to catch that mahsir. This story is really typical of 90% of the precepts usually enumerated under the heading Yama. The rest are for the most part based on local and climatic conditions, and they may or may not be applicable to your own case. And, on the other hand, there are all sorts of good rules which have never occurred to a teacher of Yoga; because those teachers never conceived the condition in which many people live today. It never occurred to the Buddha or Patanjali or Mansur el-Hallaj to advise his pupils not to practise in a flat with a wireless set next door. The result of all this is that all of you who are worth your salt will be absolutely delighted when I tell you to scrap all the rules and discover your own. Sir Richard Burton said: 'He noblest lives and noblest dies, who makes and keeps his self-made laws.' 10. This is, of course, what every man of science has to do in every experiment. This is what constitutes an experiment. The other kind of man has only bad habits. When you explore a new country, you don't know what the conditions are going to be; and you have to master those conditions by the method of trial and error. We start to penetrate the stratosphere; and we have to modify our machines in all sorts of ways which were not altogether foreseen. I wish to thunder forth once more that no questions of right or wrong enter into our problems. But in the stratosphere it is 'right' for a man to be shut up in a pressure-resisting suit electrically heated, with an oxygen supply, whereas it would be 'wrong' for him to wear it if he were running the three miles in the summer sports in the Tanezrouft. This is the pit into which all the great religious teachers have hitherto fallen, and I am sure you are all looking hungrily at me in the hope of seeing me do likewise. But no! There is one principle which carries us through all conflicts concerning conduct, because it is perfectly rigid and perfectly elastic: -- 'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.' So: it is not the least use to come and pester me about it. Perfect mastery of the violin in six easy lessons by correspondence! Should I have the heart to deny you? But Yama is different. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. *That* is Yama. Your object is to perform Yoga. Your True Will is to attain the consummation of marriage with the universe, and your ethical code must constantly be adapted precisely to the conditions of your experiment. Even when you have discovered what your code is, you will have to modify it as you progress; 'remould it nearer to the heart's desire' -- Omar Khayyam. Just so, in a Himalayan expedition your rule of daily life in the valleys of Sikkim or the Upper Indus will have to be changed when you get to the glacier. But it is possible to indicate (in general terms expressed with the greatest caution) the 'sort' of thing that is likely to be bad for you. Anything that weakens the body, that exhausts, disturbs or inflames the mind is deprecable. You are pretty sure to find as you progress that there are some conditions that cannot be eliminated at all in your particular circumstances; and then you have to find a way of dealing with these so that they make a minimum of trouble. And you will find that you cannot conquer the obstacle of Yama, and dismiss it from your mind once and for all. Conditions favourable for the beginner may become an intolerable nuisance to the adept, while, on the other hand, things which matter very little in the beginning become most serious obstacles later on. Another point is that quite unsuspected problems arise in the course of the training. The whole question of the sub-conscious mind can be dismissed almost as a joke by the average man as he goes about his daily business; it becomes a very real trouble when you discover that the tranquillity of the mind is being disturbed by a type of thought whose existence had previously been unsuspected, and whose source is unimaginable. Then again there is no perfection of materials; there will always be errors and weaknesses, and the man who wins through is the man who manages to carry on with a defective engine. The actual strain of the work develops the defects; and it is a matter of great nicety of judgment to be able to deal with the changing conditions of life. It will be seen that the formula -- 'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law' has nothing to do with 'Do as you please.' It is much more difficult to comply with the Law of Thelema than to follow out slavishly a set of dead regulations. Almost the only point of emancipation, in the sense of relief from a burden, is just the difference between Life and Death. To obey a set of rules is to shift the whole responsibility of conduct on to some superannuated Bodhisattva, who would resent you bitterly if he could see you, and tick you off in no uncertain terms for being such a fool as to think you could dodge the difficulties of research by the aid of a set of conventions which have little or nothing to do with actual conditions. Formidable indeed are the obstacles we have created by the simple process of destroying our fetters. The analogy of the con- quest of the air holds excellently well. The things that worry the pedestrian worry us not at all; but to control a new element your Yama must be that biological principle of adaptation to the new conditions, adjustment of the faculties to those conditions, and consequent success in those conditions, which were enunciated in respect of planetary evolution by Herbert Spencer and now generalised to cover all modes of being by the Law of Thelema. But now let me begin to unleash my indignation. My job -- the establishment of the Law of Thelema -- is a most discouraging job. It is the rarest thing to find anyone who has any ideas at all on the subject of liberty. Because the Law of Thelema is the law of liber- ty, everybody's particular hair stands on end like the quills of the fretful porpentine; they scream like an uprooted mandrake, and flee in terror from the accursed spot. Because: the exercise of liberty means that you have to think for yourself, and the natural inertia of mankind wants religion and ethics ready-made. However ridiculous or shameful a theory or practice is, they would rather comply than examine it. Sometimes it is hook-swinging or Sati; sometimes consub- stantiation or supra-lapsarianism; they do not mind what they are brought up in, as long as they are well brought up. They do not want to be bothered about it. The Old School Tie wins through. They never suspect the meaning of the pattern on the tie: the Broad Arrow. You remember Dr. Alexandre Manette in 'A Tale of Two Cities.' He had been imprisoned for many years in the Bastille, and to save himself from going mad had obtained permission to make shoes. When he was released, he disliked it. He had to be approached with the utmost precaution; he fell into an agony of fear if his door was left unlocked; he cobbled away in a frenzy of anxiety lest the shoes should not be finished in time -- the shoes that nobody wanted. Charles Dickens lived at a time and in a country such that this state of mind appeared abnormal and even deplorable, but today it is a characteristic of 95 per cent of the people of England. Subjects that were freely discussed under Queen Victoria are now absolutely taboo; because everyone knows subconsciously that to touch them, however gently, is to risk precipitating the catastrophe of their dry-rot. There are not going to be many Yogis in England, because there will not be more than a very few indeed who will have the courage to tackle even this first of the eight limbs of Yoga: Yama. I do not think that anything will save the country: unless through war and revolution, when those who wish to survive will have to think and act for themselves according to their desperate needs, and not by some rotten yard-stick of convention. Why, even the skill of the workman has almost decayed within a generation! Forty years ago there were very few jobs that a man could not do with a jack- knife and a woman with a hair-pin; today you have to have a separate gadget for every trivial task. If you want to become Yogis, you will have to get a move on. Lege! Judica! Tace! Love is the law, love under will. Sleep comes over her. once she stirs in the middle of the night, and half asleep, she barely make out some presence outside of her, a second the presence is gone, and she forgets all about it as her peaceful sleep and dreams overtake her once again.......... XXXXX THE EQUINOX OF THE GODS CHAPTER 4 The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. The Birth of FRATER---------- 5○=6□ A∴A∴ (The Mystic Name of an Adept of this degree is not to be divulged without special reasons for so doing.) In the autumn of 1898 George Cecil Jones had directed the attention of Frater Perdurabo to a book entitled "The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage." The essence of this book is as follows : The aspirant must have a house secure from observation and interference. In this house there must be an oratory with a window to the East, and a door to the North opening upon a terrace, at the end of which must be a lodge. He must have a Robe, Crown, Wand, Altar, Incense, Anointing Oil, and a Silver Lamen. The terrace and lodge must be strewn with fine sand. He withdraws himself gradually from human intercourse to devote himself more and more to prayer for the space of four months. He must then occupy two months in almost continuous prayer, speaking as little as possible to anybody. At the end of this period he invokes a being described as the Holy Guardian Angel, who appears to him (or to a child employed by him), and who will write in dew upon the Lamen, which is placed upon the Altar. The Oratory is filled with Divine Perfume not of the aspirant's kindling. After a period of communion with the Angel, he summons the Four Great Princes of the Daemonic World, and forces them to swear obedience. On the following day he calls forward and subdues the Eight Sub-Princes; and the day after that, the many Spirits serving these. These inferior Daemons, of whom four act as familiar spirits, then operate a collection of talismans for various purposes. Such is a brief account of the Operation described in the book. This Operation strongly appealed to our student. He immediately set about to procure a suitable house, and to prepare everything that might be necessary for the operation. All was ready for the beginning in Easter of 1900, and it must be said that the preliminary work alone is so tremendous that a long story might be written of the events of these 18 months of preparation. The Operation itself was however never begun. A fortnight or so before the time appointed, he received an urgent appeal from his Master to save him and the Order from destruction. He gave up his own prospects of personal advancement without hesitation, and hastened to Paris. (See the Equinox "The Temple of Solomon the King" for a fairly full account of these various matters. The "Master" was the late S.L. Mathers.) That the Master proved to be no Master, and the Order no Order, but the incarnation of Disorder, had no effect upon the good Karma created by this renunciation of a project on which he had set his heart for so long. In Mexico, he kept vigil during several nights in the Temple of the Order of the Lamp of the Invisible Light, an Order whose High Priest is pledged to maintain a Secret and Eternal Lamp. In this shrine he received some shadowing forth of the Vision of the Holy Guardian Angel, and that of the Four Great Princes : here also he renewed the Oath of the Operation. (The whole of his magical career is best interpreted as the performance of this Operation. One must not suppose that Initiation is a formality, observing the "unities," like being made a Mason. All life pertains to the process, and it pervades the whole personality; the official recognition of attainment is merely a token of what had taken place.) On his return to Scotland in 1903, he found ample evidence of the presence of the forces of the Operation, but by now, having conceived that Work in a subtler manner and having prepared to carry it out in the Temple of his own body, having seen Magick, in short, more of less in the manner in which it is seen in Parts II and III of the Book 4, he was able to dispense with the exterior physical appurtenances of this Operation. We must now pass over a few years, and deal with the completion of this Operation, although it is in a sense irrelevant to the purpose of this book. During the winter of 1905-6, he was traveling across China. He had come to the point of conquering his mind. That mind had broken up. He saw that the human mind is by its very nature evanescent, because of the fact that nature is not unity but duality. Truth is relative. All things end in mystery. In such sentences have the philosophers of the past formulated this proposition, as announcing the intellectual bankruptcy which he, with greater frankness, describes as insanity. Passing from this, he became as a little child, and on reaching the Unity behind the mind, found the purpose of his life formulated in these words, The Obtaining of the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel. He then found himself, having destroyed all other Karma, perfectly free to pursue this one work. He then accomplished the six months of Invocation, as prescribed in the Book of the Sacred Magic, and was rewarded in October, 1906, by complete success. (An account of these matters, in part, is to be found in the Equinox, Vol. I, No. VIII, and in his own poem "Aha !") He then proceeded to the evocation and conquest of the Four Great Princes and their Inferiors, a work whose results must be studied in the light of his subsequent career. We have now finished all that is necessary to say concerning him, for the account of some of his further Attainment is given fully in Liber CDXVIII, "The Vision and the Voice," also in Equinox Vol. I No. X "The Temple of Solomon the King," where the unexpected result of the Communion of the Holy Guardian Angel is shown in a symbolism which can hardly be understood without reference to the events of 1904, which are now wholly pertinent to this Essay. i-the trouble about waiting for the future is,once youve turned that corner only one thing is on the otherside,a good time out for a long crash in,in through the doors of perception and onto the twilights of my life,as the love i feel glitters in the night ,the women in my life shines brightly in my eyes, please tell me shes alive and well,or i ll fall in & out and dye in the best of possible way!/x.Schools
