  • New Hoofdriver Split 7" OUT NOW!

Our split 7" with Physical Forms (new band featuring Busdriver and Jeff from The Mae Shi) is out today on Polyvinyl. It's called Hoofdriver and is available on yellow vinyl instant MP3. It's the first in a series of 7"s where a guest vocalist sings self-composed lyrics and melodies over one of our new songs. The B-side will feature exclusive tracks from the vocalist's band. Hoofdriver features Regan Farquhar singing over our track "I Did Crimes For You" along with an original track from Physical Forms.

  • ~JOHN PLAYING SHOW ON JULY 25

Hey all -- For those in the Bay Area, a late announcement of a show coming up this coming Sunday, July 25.  I'll be playing in a trio with Thollem McDonas and Scott Amendola at Cafe Du Nord (2170 Market Street in San Francisco).  We'll be playing to a series of films by Martha Colburn.  Should be great fun!  It will be the first time this group will be playing together.  Shudder (Bruckman/Grabmiller/Greenlief) with special guest John Shiurba is also playing.  Hope to see some of you there!  More info at www.cafedunord.com

  • ~ PLANET EARTH WORLD

We've started!  Finally!  It's been a couple weeks since we've gotten together and begun recording material for the next Deerhoof album and, even though I'm exhausted and can't think straight, I can tell we're onto something special.  We've got a few more weeks to try and get at least the basic ideas outlined.  My small brain is threatening to lose grasp of what we've done so far, but we've got a lot more to do....  Can't wait til we can share it.

    Deep in Recordingland,

    John

PS: I've just received my copies of the duo CD that piano virtuoso Thollem McDonas and I released on the Portuguese label Dromos Records.  It's called All for Now.  They look amazing!  The artwork is handmade by Martha Colburn, which is appropriate as Martha was the person who brought Thollem and I together.  We performed alongside some of her movies at a couple of performances at SF MOMA a couple of months ago, and Thollem had the idea of recording ourselves in the same space as the performances took place.  The folks at the museum were incredibly cooperative and helpful (thanks, Frank and Gina!), and we got to use the room for a couple of hours to record.  It's a limited run of 200 copies, I believe.  If anybody's interested in hearing, you can go to: http://dromosrecords.blogspot.com/.  For those that don't know Thollem or his music, all I can say is that he is one of the most powerful musicians and people I've had the fortune to be around, a fountain of creativity.  We'll also be doing more recording later in the year in a group with Mike Watt and Tim Barnes -- my first time playing with both of these gentlemen, and I can't express how excited I am -- and we'll also be doing a short 4-show trio tour (without Mike, unfortunately, due to Stooges tour) at the end of August in Texas and Louisiana.  I'll post details on that tour when it's getting closer to the date.
  • ~ I PLAYED TYMPANI IN HIGH SCHOOL

And my brother played saxophone. He recently went back to the old school for a special concert. They were honoring Mr. Dutrow, who has now been teaching band there for 30 years.

After the concert Dutrow told my brother something surprising. You do the same pieces for 30 years and you start to get good at it. Even though any one student is never there for more than four years, you slowly learn what works. My brother and I agreed that there's no shortcut for this kind of knowledge.

We just started recording a new album yesterday. As usual nothing is usual. The only thing we know how to do is not know what to do. Sometimes I think the only thing we are becoming experts at is being beginners.

Which can be kind of fun: if you always try to do something you don't know how to do, then you can have beginner's luck again and again.

    Greg
