Bio
I am an East London-based spoken word artist and perfomance poet and I have been performing under the pseudonym Captain of the Rant since May 2008, and have quickly become established as an energetic, passionate and witty performer. I have shared stages with poetry legends such as Martin Newell, John Hegley, Kate Tempest, Steve Larkin, David J and Attila The Stockbroker. I have performed as a featured artist for national poetry organisation Apples & Snakes. My festival appearances include Climate Camp 2009, the OneTaste tent at Secret Garden Party 2010, Cambridgeshire and the Hammer & Tongue stage at Wood Festival 2010, Oxfordshire. In 2009 and 2010, I also appeared on radical radio show Dissident Island Radio for two live performances. In early 2010, I recorded and released an EP with the producer Hair Explosion called No Copyright Necessary to great acclaim. We are currently in the process of releasing the second EP, Nudges, Whispers and Threat. As a writer, my poetry and articles have been published in a diverse array of publications, including The Erotic Review (issue 104, November 2009), stand-up comedy website Chortle, Engima magazine, anarchist newspaper Class War and webzine La Bouche (issue 3, October 2009). Here's what some publications and individuals have said about my work: “[The No Copyright Necessary EP] is poignant and funny... it manages to stay angry but at times introspective... a complex and beautiful work” - Jo Problems, Big Wheel online fanzine “Watching Captain of the Rant perform is like observing a blistering, runaway, out of control, giant spoken word juggernaut... blindingly brilliant brain sparking stuff that needs to be seen!” Daniel Cockrill, Bang Said The Gun “Captain of the Rant is in your face social commentary, as well as funny and at times poignant” - Pete The Temp “Combines a barbed wire wit with a ferocious delivery that has made him one of the most distinctive voices out there today” - Speechmotion “The biting social commentary unleashed by Captain of the Rant clearly came straight from the heart and was tasty food for thought” - Hannah Rodger, Fringe Report “When he pulled out the estate agent poem the place went nuts!” - David J “Very impressed” - Attila The Stockbroker "What particularly strikes you when listening to his work, along with his unshying honesty, is his ability to place personal experience in a wider social context. Brave enough to question his own thoughts and actions in a public domain he almost challenges the listener, in words accessible to all, as to their own accountability and responsibility" - Mudkiss Fanzine -

Bio:
..And hello there. I'm Captain of the Rant - irritant of the police and rebel against quiet things. A blunt, intelligent and witty socially consious performance poet, coming from the DIY punk scene because that's where pretty much all the really great, angry and heart (but not global) warming stuff happens. I think personal politics - with its passionate mess of flaws and contradictions - are the most geniune and it's that often massive gap between ideal and individual action that I want to explore with my work. My poems are like hardcore songs: short, sharp and to the point. My performances are gut-busting, ferocious readings without ever forgetting that a man jumping around like a monkey while trying to write seriously about politics and society is pretty funny in itself. I fucking love performing.
I'll play just about anywhere, so have a listen to my stuff and just drop me a line if you want to book me.
BREAKING NEWS! Captain of the Rant vs. Hair Explosion's new five track EP, 'No Copyright Necessary' is available for completely free download at http://captainoftherant.bandcamp.com! Here's a lovely review of it from Big Wheel Online Magazine:
"No Copyright Necessary" is five spoken word pieces, some set to trip hop-esque beats reminiscent of Aesop Rock, some layered over insidious electronica, and some delivered raw, naked, and profane. You need this album... The Captain rants against the stupidity of reality shows, technological isolation, and even U2. But it’s more than that, it’s a refusal of the assertion that these are the desirable things in life, that the mass media is right and we are wrong... The album builds on these themes, with a piece railing against the tech takeover of our lives. It still manages to be self-deprecating and funny though... This is what ultimately keeps this album interesting. It manages to stay angry, but at times introspective without straying into that intolerably whiny Emo realm. It is a complex and beautiful work, with lines that resonate, making you want to hear the Captain spit them at you again and again, and lines that will bring you to your feet and push you out the door."
And here's some other lovely comments people have said about my performances and the EP:.."What particularly strikes you when listening to his work, along with his unshying honesty, is his ability to place personal experience in a wider social context. Brave enough to question his own thoughts and actions in a public domain he almost challenges the listener, in words accessible to all, as to their own accountability and responsibility" - Mudkiss Fanzine
"Very punk rock and down to earth" - Mild Peril Fanzine
"Excellent" - Urban 75
.."Spewing stiff, rhythmic tyrades, he is a poet devoid of pretension. No one is performing poetry quite like him at the moment... a pillar of his scene" - Sam Russo
"Although it is poetry it in some ways transcends it... distinctive, confrontational. [The demo] has passion, rage and life!" - Nick Card
"Great stuff" - Neal Zetter
"Genius" - Dave Hughes
"Lyrics are like it was written by a ten year-old. Very poor" - North from Punktastic.com forum
"Freaking brilliant" - The King Blues
"Highly recommended" - Dirty Ska & Punk Promotions
"Well on point... fucking fire" - The Ruby Kid
