Originaire de Bristol (UK), Joe Volk a débuté comme chanteur au sein du groupe Gonga. Il participe également au projet Crippled Black Phoenix, aux côtés de Dominic Aitchison (Mogwaï). En 2007, il sort un premier album solo Derwent Waters Saint produit par Adrian Utley (Portishead), qui est unanimement salué par la critique anglaise. Adepte du fingerpicking, à la façon de Nike Drake ou José Gonzalez, son univers est empreint de folk et mêle élégamment éléments électroniques et sources sonores incongrues."
